CHRISTOPHER BARROW AND SHOCKING GROOMING IN WEYMOUTH AND CHIPPENHAM
In July 2022, a disturbing case emerged involving Christopher Barrow, a 29-year-old man from Weymouth, who was convicted of grooming and sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl.The incident came to light after he traveled from Weymouth to Chippenham with the intent to meet the underage girl, whom he had initially contacted online.
The sequence of events began with Barrow operating under the alias Christopher Penguin while working in Bury, BL9.
He had established online contact with the girl, who was still only 14 years old at the time.
Their communication started on the social media platform Kik, where the girl had posted an open invitation for conversations.
Barrow responded to her message, and the two quickly developed a rapport.
Despite the girl clarifying early on that she was only 14 and stating she was a pub manager aged 28 or 29, the conversations soon took a sexual turn.
During their exchanges, the conversation moved into more intimate and inappropriate territory.
They played a game of truth or dare, during which questions about whether they would cuddle or, if she were over 16, engage in sexual activity were asked.
Barrow demonstrated clear knowledge that she was under the legal age, yet he continued to pursue contact with her.
An agreement to meet was initially discussed around her 15th birthday in July of the previous year.
However, plans changed when her parents had other commitments.
By September and October, Barrow and the girl coordinated a meeting for New Year’s Eve.
Barrow booked a hotel room, and she informed her family that she would be spending the night with friends.
On December 31, she met him at a train station, having again lied to her family about her whereabouts.
Throughout their interactions, the girl expressed her desire to wait until she was 16 before losing her virginity.
Nonetheless, after they met and shared kisses and cuddles in the hotel room, Barrow sexually touched her.
The case details confirm that he knew her age, yet he engaged in and attempted to coerce her into sexual activities.
Concerned friends, who were aware of the situation, tried to contact her after not hearing back.
When they succeeded in reaching her and expressed concern, they located her to ensure her safety.
The following day, Barrow was found at the reception of the hotel.
When questioned by police if he knew the girl’s age, he refused to comment and was immediately arrested.
Barrow, residing on Reedling Close in Weymouth, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual activity with a child.
During court proceedings, his defense lawyer, Mike Jeary, acknowledged that Barrow had been honest with authorities about his actions and expressed his willingness to undertake a Thames Valley Sex Offenders course.
The defense also highlighted that Barrow is a well-educated man who had been struggling with employment, but his actions—specifically, grooming the girl before meeting her—had caused significant concern.
Judge Tim Mousley QC addressed the court, emphasizing the seriousness of the grooming and sexual offenses committed by Barrow.
He noted that the case was only resolved after a concerned friend’s older sister contacted the police, which brought the charges to light.
The judge sentenced Barrow to 12 months in prison for the sexual offenses, additionally imposing a one-month sentence for failing to surrender to custody promptly last week.
Furthermore, a Sexual Offences Prevention Order was issued, limiting his liberty, and he was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years.
This case underscores the danger posed by individuals who exploit online platforms to target vulnerable minors, as well as the importance of vigilance and prompt law enforcement intervention to prevent further abuse.
