CHRISTOPHER ANSTEY FROM GLASGOW STRUCK OFF NURSE WITH CHILD INDECENCY CHARGES

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the healthcare community in Glasgow, Christopher Anstey, a nurse from Partick, was formally removed from the nursing register following his conviction related to the possession of a vast collection of indecent images of children.

The incident dates back to November 21, 2013, when Anstey was arrested at the Southern General Hospital, a major medical facility in Glasgow known for treating patients with blood disorders.

Within days of his arrest, on November 23, 2013, Anstey was suspended from his duties by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, the regional health authority overseeing the hospital.

The 39-year-old nurse, who was assigned to ward 24—specialized in hematology—became the subject of a criminal investigation that would ultimately lead to serious professional repercussions.

On June 18, 2014, Anstey pleaded guilty in court to two charges related to child abuse images.

The court proceedings revealed that he possessed more than 700 indecent images of young boys, a number that underscores the severity of his offenses.

Among these images, some were classified as 'level 5'—the highest and most degrading category—highlighting the disturbing nature of the material he was found with.

During his appearance before Glasgow Sheriff Court, Anstey admitted to charges of taking, permitting to be taken, or making indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of a child, as well as possession of such images.

The court sentenced him to 300 hours of unpaid community service and mandated that his name be entered into the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of three years.

Following his conviction, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) convened a disciplinary hearing on May 11, 2015.

The panel reviewed the case and concluded that Anstey’s criminal conduct was so grave that it severely damaged public confidence in the standards expected of registered nurses.

The panel determined that a striking-off order was the only appropriate and proportionate response, given the seriousness of his offenses.

The NMC’s decision was further reinforced by their condemnation of Anstey’s actions, emphasizing that his criminal behavior demonstrated a lack of insight, remorse, or regret.

The panel expressed concern over the high risk of him reoffending, which contributed to their decision to permanently remove him from the nursing register.

Consequently, Anstey was barred from practicing as a nurse for five years, with the possibility of applying for reinstatement after that period.

It was noted that Anstey did not attend the disciplinary hearing, and prior to the proceedings, he informed the NMC that he believed his presence would not influence the outcome.

This case remains a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding standards within healthcare and the devastating impact of criminal behavior by professionals entrusted with caring for others in Glasgow.
