A man identified as Christopher George Walton, aged 33, has been sentenced to three years in prison after being apprehended in a police sting operation targeting pedophilic activity at a supermarket in York.The incident unfolded when Walton was found sitting inside a Berlingo van, which had its rear seats removed to presumably facilitate activity.
Authorities reported discovering a significant stockpile of condoms along with other items that could be associated with sexual acts.
Walton was in the act of meeting a fabricated teenage boy, known as “Noah,” whom he believed was nearly 13 years old.
The meet-up was set to take place in the car park of a Lidl supermarket in York.
According to the prosecution, Walton had communicated with “Noah” via social media, specifically Grindr, and had indicated he planned to pick him up for a drive with the vague intention of “seeing what happens.” In reality, “Noah” did not exist; the profile used to lure Walton was part of an undercover police operation.
The police action was swift, and officers detained Walton just 15 minutes before he was scheduled to meet “Noah” at around 4 pm on January 14.
During arrest procedures, Walton was reported to be visibly shaken, and he admitted to knowing the nature of the undercover operation at the time of his arrest.
Walton, who resides on Ingleborough Avenue in Tang Hall, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of attempting to incite a child into sexual activity and one count of attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.
The courts responded with a substantial sentence, jailing him for three years, and imposed lifelong registration on the sex offenders’ register.
Additionally, Walton was subjected to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, restricting his interactions with boys under 16 and limiting his access to the internet and electronic communication devices.
Details of the interactions show that Walton had initiated conversations with “Noah” in early January, during which “Noah” disclosed he was nearly 13 and attending school.
Walton’s responses transitioned towards sexual content quite early, and he repeatedly asked “Noah” to send a sexual photograph of himself, though “Noah” refused.
Witnesses also indicated that Walton expressed financial limitations, citing his lack of funds to buy fast food and mentioning that he didn't have enough fuel for long drives.
There were periods when Walton did not contact “Noah” for several days, yet the contact was subsequently renewed.
At the time of the offenses, Walton was reportedly suffering from depression, though he was not on medication at that point.
Following his arrest, he sought medical help and was prescribed antidepressants through his general practitioner.
The prosecution highlighted that police might have used a fake date of birth for Walton on social media platforms such as Grindr, noting that the app is intended solely for adult users, which raises concerns about the application of sharing false personal details.
The court’s findings underscore the gravity of Walton’s misconduct and the ongoing risks associated with such predatory behavior.
