A 20-year-old man named Charlie White from Lancashire was caught in a disturbing online sting that revealed his predatory intentions towards minors and his possession of illicit images.The investigation was triggered after he sent a photograph of his vehicle's registration plates over Snapchat, exposing crucial evidence that ultimately led to his identification and arrest.
The series of events unfolded when White initiated contact with a Snapchat profile that, unknown to him, was being operated by undercover police officers.
This contact took place on January 10 of this year.
Operating under the username "User127," White approached the decoy, pretending to be seeking companionship by stating he was "looking for a friendly person to chat to." During their initial exchange, he conveyed a desire for a more inappropriate connection by saying he was "looking for a younger girl" and hinted at engaging in sexual activity, suggesting he wanted to have "fun." Concerned by the conversation, White then shockingly sent a clear photograph of himself genitally explicit in nature along with the message, "I hope we can have fun." When the pretend minor, posing as a 12-year-old girl, disclosed her actual age, White responded with alarming indifference, claiming that he was "fine with it if you want to" and leaving the decision to her, saying, "It's up to you.
It could be fun." Further into their chat, using a fake name, "Josh," White pressed the decoy for explicit images, calling her "cute" and requesting she take a selfie in the bathroom.
The conversation escalated when, on January 13, he claimed to work at a nightclub in St Helens and inquired about her location in Exeter, showcasing a further attempt to establish a connection.
The conversations persisted through the following day, during which White sent an explicit photograph of himself accompanied by the caption, "Hope you like it.
Maybe you can send too, I'd love to see your body." The offender also expressed with apparent desire his hope to meet in person, sending another photo of his face and stating, "If it's ok with you, it's completely fine with me.
You're stunning." His intentions were clear as he confessed wanting "late night fun" and continued to solicit indecent images, even as he asked about her school life.
Despite being warned that his actions were making her uncomfortable, White remained persistent, sending another explicit photo and six videos of himself performing sexual acts, urging her to "give it a go." These disturbing communications were part of his effort to prey on a young girl through digital means.
The police were able to identify White as the perpetrator after he sent a photograph of his car, prominently displaying his registration plate.
This crucial piece of evidence facilitated his arrest at his home on March 8.
During the subsequent search, authorities seized his Apple iPhone, which was found to contain a collection of indecent images and videos, confirming the extent of his illegal activities.
In police interviews, White explained he was attempting to "relieve stress" and denied having sexual feelings towards children.
However, he admitted that his device contained more illicit material, indicating a broader collection of such content.
When further examined, the phone revealed a recording of a video call from January 14.
This footage, lasting about 24 seconds, showed White engaged in a chat with an unidentified girl estimated to be between 12 and 14 years old.
During this call, White asked the girl for a "flash," prompting her to lift her top in response.
He then messaged her seeking more images, but she refused to engage further, after which White commented, "worth a try," and the girl turned off her camera.
White, who has no previous convictions, was brought before Liverpool Crown Court to face serious charges.
His lawyer, Peter White, acknowledged that his client had little mitigation beyond his prompt guilty plea and cooperation with law enforcement.
The defense highlighted that White was still immature, somewhat educated, and expressed a desire to seek help to prevent future offending.
White conveyed his wish to turn his life around, pursue employment, and contribute positively to society.
The prosecution outlined the numerous offenses committed by White, which included inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, possession of indecent images, attempting to cause a child to watch sexual activities, and engaging in sexual communications with a minor.
The charges also covered multiple counts related to the creation, possession, and distribution of indecent images.
In sentencing, Recorder Richard Pratt KC emphasized the severity of the offense, noting the coercive nature of White’s actions, which demonstrated a serious sexual problem.
He acknowledged White's guilty plea and the potential for more illicit material on his devices, but also considered White's age, immaturity, and lack of prior convictions.
He sentenced White to two years in prison and imposed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, which requires him to register as a sex offender for the same period.
Throughout the proceedings, White was supported in the courtroom by his mother, sister, and partner, who observed as he was given the maximum penalty allowed under the law for his disturbing crimes against minors in Lancashire.
