CHARLES HOLDAWAY'S SHAMEFUL REPEATED OFFENSES IN YORK: PAEDOPHILE JAILED FOR SECOND TIME OVER CHILD INDECENT IMAGES
In a disturbing case that has once again cast a shadow over the city of York, Charles Holdaway, a man with a troubling history of possessing indecent images of children, has been sentenced to prison for the second time. The 61-year-old resident of Eden Close, Woodthorpe, was found guilty of possessing and downloading a significant number of illegal images, including some classified as the most serious category, during a police raid at his home.
Holdaway's criminal history in this area is extensive.
Back in 2004, he appeared before York Crown Court charged with 17 offenses related to the possession of sexual images of minors.
At that time, he was ordered to undertake a sex offenders' rehabilitation course and was placed on the sex offenders' register for five years.
Despite these measures, his criminal behavior persisted, leading to his re-arrest and subsequent conviction in 2016.
The recent investigation was initiated after police received a tip-off from the national police Child Exploitation and Online Protection unit.
On August 29, officers raided Holdaway’s residence, where they discovered a troubling collection of illegal material on his computer.
The police found a total of 324 illicit images and one illegal video, with four of the images falling into the most serious category of child exploitation material.
The authorities also identified that some of these images had been downloaded over a period of three years using file-sharing systems, and they included content that depicted serious sexual abuse against children.
During the police interview, Holdaway was required to serve a formal notice before he disclosed which electronic devices belonged to him and provided the passwords to access them.
His solicitor, Neal Kutte, acknowledged that his client had a deep-seated sexual interest in children, which he had managed to keep under control for most of his life.
Despite his otherwise respectable background and hard work until retirement, his actions have caused irreparable damage to his personal life.
His arrest led to the breakdown of his marriage and estrangement from his adult children.
Judge Andrew Haslam, presiding over the case, expressed his condemnation of Holdaway’s actions, stating, “But for people like you, these children would never be sexually abused.
The first order simply didn’t work.
Here you are back again before the crown court.” The judge sentenced Holdaway to 14 months in prison, a term that reflects the seriousness of his repeated offenses.
Additionally, he was placed on the sex offenders’ register for ten years and subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, which restricts his internet use for the same period.
This order allows police to monitor his online activities closely to prevent further offenses.
Prosecutor John Boumphrey detailed the police operation, emphasizing that the raid was prompted by a tip-off from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection unit.
The investigation revealed that Holdaway’s collection included images of the most severe category, and the illegal material was stored across multiple devices, including a computer owned by his child.
The police had to serve a formal notice before Holdaway disclosed which devices belonged to him and the passwords used to access them.
Reflecting on his past, it was revealed that in 2004, Holdaway had 342 illegal images stored across three computers, one of which was owned by a minor.
He claimed ignorance about the content when files were transferred from a broken computer.
His solicitor highlighted that Holdaway was “deeply ashamed” of his actions, which have had a profound impact on his family life.
His arrest and subsequent conviction have led to the deterioration of his marriage and strained relationships with his adult children, leaving him to face the consequences of his repeated criminal behavior in the city of York.
