CHARLES CONNELL FROM GLASGOW FACES LONG JAIL SENTENCE AFTER BRUTAL SEX ATTACKS AND VIOLENCE
A man named Charles Connell, residing in Glasgow, is now facing a significant prison term following a series of violent and sexually motivated crimes that spanned over a decade.Connell, aged 53, was found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow after a detailed trial that revealed the extent of his brutal actions against multiple victims.
He was convicted of raping and assaulting one woman, actions that put her life in danger.
In addition, Connell was found guilty of raping another woman and then indecently and physically attacking a third individual.
The court also heard evidence of a separate assault on a man, which resulted in severe injuries, including a broken cheekbone, permanent disfigurement, and lasting impairment.
The crimes took place across various locations within Glasgow, including the neighborhoods of Knightswood, Kelvinbridge, Drumchapel, and Springburn.
The timeline of these offenses stretches from 1988 to 2002, highlighting a pattern of violence and abuse over many years.
During the trial, jurors learned about the disturbing details of Connell’s interactions with his victims.
One woman, who was indecently assaulted by Connell, described how she was emotionally broken by his actions.
Prosecutor Lorraine Glancy KC recounted that the assault was preceded by a seemingly trivial argument over shepherd's pie, specifically her preference for mince and potatoes, which appeared to trigger Connell’s violent outburst.
At other times, Connell’s anger was provoked by his dissatisfaction with the woman’s cooking skills or her failure to meet his personal standards.
Over the years, this woman endured repeated attacks, including physical violence such as punches, slaps, and kicks.
She also faced threats with a knife and was knocked unconscious during one of these assaults.
Another victim, who was raped as a teenager after developing a relationship with Connell, was able to recall specific details about her attack, including what she was wearing more than 30 years ago.
She too suffered physical abuse at his hands.
A third woman, attacked in the mid-1990s, was approached by police years later while walking with her partner.
She recalled her shock and distress when questioned about Connell, asking, “Why are you bringing his name up?” The impact of Connell’s violence has left one man scarred for life, with the court hearing that Connell attempted to dismiss his assault as “a bit of a laugh,” a claim that prosecutors dismissed as misleading and inappropriate.
Throughout the trial, Connell’s own testimony appeared to portray him as a victim, suggesting that he was unfairly targeted by a “criminal conspiracy.” Prosecutors, however, dismissed this notion, questioning whether any such conspiracy existed, especially given the evidence of his manipulative and bullying behavior.
The prosecutor emphasized that Connell’s actions and demeanor clearly demonstrated his capacity for violence and control.
While on bail during the proceedings, Connell was remanded into custody by Judge Alison Stirling.
He is scheduled to face sentencing later this month in Edinburgh on the six charges he faces.
In the meantime, he has been placed on the sex offenders register, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing concern for public safety.
