In a disturbing case that has shocked the residents of Glasgow, particularly those living in the Carmyle area, two dogs suffered prolonged neglect at the hands of their owners, Chantelle Crossan and Liam McLachlan. The incident came to light after a series of investigations by the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Scottish SPCA), revealing the heartbreaking conditions of two beloved pets, Kenzo and Tyson, who endured severe malnutrition and neglect.

Chantelle Crossan, born on September 13, 1998, and her partner Liam McLachlan, born on June 17, 1999, both reside on Carmyle Avenue in the Glasgow neighborhood of Carmyle, G32. The couple, who are also parents to two young children, faced serious allegations after authorities uncovered the extent of their neglect towards their animals. The case drew widespread condemnation, with many condemning the couple’s apparent disregard for the welfare of their pets.

The Scottish SPCA’s chief inspector, McIntyre, detailed the harrowing circumstances leading to the intervention. On January 30, 2022, officers responded to a distress call from an animal helpline, which reported hearing noises that sounded like fighting coming from the property on Carmyle Avenue. This prompted a visit to the residence, where the officers were greeted by a woman who identified herself as Chantelle Crossan.

Inside the home, the inspectors found two dogs in deplorable condition. The first was Kenzo, a three-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier type, characterized by her visible ribs and emaciated state. The second was Tyson, a five-month-old Cane Corso cross, who was also severely underweight, with ribs and hip bones protruding sharply through his fur. Tyson’s skin was dry, flaky, and hairless in patches, especially around his face and legs, indicating untreated skin issues. The condition of both animals was so severe that immediate veterinary intervention was deemed necessary.

During the inspection, the owners claimed that Kenzo was approximately three years old and Tyson about five months. They also stated that neither dog was receiving any veterinary treatment at the time. The veterinary examination confirmed the worst fears: both dogs were suffering from chronic underfeeding and neglect. Kenzo was underweight but showed no signs of injuries or underlying health issues. Tyson, however, was emaciated, with minimal muscle mass in his legs and a thin, taught skin covering his groin area due to lack of tissue. Hair loss was evident on his thighs, and he exhibited mild redness in his right ear, along with one testicle that had not fully developed.

The vet concluded that the dogs’ poor condition was the result of prolonged neglect, estimating that it would have taken at least three months for them to reach such a state. The fact that Tyson was still a young puppy meant he required extra nutrition for proper growth and development, and the long-term effects of this neglect could impact him for years to come. The veterinary team emphasized that the owners’ failure to seek medical treatment further compounded the animals’ suffering.

Following the assessment, both dogs were taken into custody and transported for urgent veterinary care. The authorities moved swiftly to ensure their safety, and the court proceedings followed shortly thereafter. Sheriff Kevin McCarron sentenced the couple, emphasizing the gravity of their actions. Crossan was ordered to complete 80 hours of community service, while McLachlan received a sentence of 120 hours. Additionally, both individuals were banned from owning or caring for any animals for a period of six years, a restriction that will last until June 2029.

The Scottish SPCA expressed their disappointment with the relatively short ban, stating that given the severity of the neglect, they would have preferred a longer prohibition to prevent any future incidents. The case has sparked ongoing discussions about animal welfare and the responsibilities of pet owners in Glasgow, highlighting the importance of vigilance and prompt intervention in cases of suspected cruelty.
