CARE HOME MOTHER AND DAUGHTER JAILED FOR THEFT FROM 94-YEAR-OLD
A mother and daughter who exploited their trusted roles at a care facility to steal from a 94-year-old resident have been sentenced to prison.
Susan Stewart, the facility’s general manager, and Carly Douglas, a caregiver, stole over £20,000 from the elderly woman in Sunderland.
Stewart embezzled nearly £3,000 and received £6,000 of the stolen funds, while Douglas stole £18,000 and made phone calls pretending to be the victim in an attempt to reactivate her bank account.
Stewart was given a 27-month prison term, and Douglas received a 30-month sentence.
The court was informed that Stewart also attempted to conceal her thefts by manipulating the care home's computer system.
The victim, who passed away in 2017, had moved into the care home following falls, with the thefts taking place between June and July 2016.
The case was characterized as a grave breach of trust involving fraud and the exploitation of a vulnerable elderly woman.
