CARL SHORT AND SHOCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN SWANSEA
Carl Short, a 36-year-old caretaker at a primary school in Swansea, has been convicted of possessing and distributing indecent images of minors, in a case that has shocked the local community. The investigation into Short’s activities was initiated after authorities discovered an indecent image of a child uploaded to a social networking site, which was traced back to his mobile phone number.
The arrest took place last July on the grounds of Pennard Primary School in Swansea, where officers from the South Wales Police online investigation team apprehended him.
During the arrest, officers found Short in possession of a Samsung mobile phone with a yellow case.
When questioned, he initially denied any knowledge of the allegations, claiming he was unaware of the situation.
He was asked to hand over his phone, which he did, but he also requested permission to lock an interior office within the school, a request that was denied as he was to be escorted to the police station.
Short did not voluntarily surrender a second mobile device, a black Samsung model, which he kept in his pocket.
During the journey to Swansea Central police station, he made a statement indicating a disturbing awareness of his actions, saying, “I have tried entrapping people,” and expressing confusion about the situation, stating, “I don’t understand what is happening here.” Further examination of the second phone revealed a significant number of indecent images of children.
Authorities identified a total of 393 images across three categories, with 15 classified as Category A—the most severe—36 in Category B, and 342 in Category C.
The investigation uncovered that 19 of these images had been shared via the messaging app Kik between May and June of the previous year.
Short had created multiple chat groups under aliases such as Taz and The Real Duff Man, with group names like ‘Candid teen,’ ‘Schoolgirls,’ and ‘Teen share,’ each comprising between 40 and 50 members.
In addition to sharing images, conversations within these groups revealed discussions about the age preferences of potential victims.
Authorities also found that Short had installed cleaning software on his phone, indicating an attempt to conceal his activities.
During his police interview, he admitted to being the administrator of these Kik groups and claimed he set them up with the intention of trapping others.
Short pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing indecent images of children and three counts of distributing such images.
His defense attorney, Vince Williams, acknowledged his client’s troubling interests, stating, “Mr Short does now accept that he has a sexual interest in young girls.
He became deeply immersed and that progressed into setting up Kik accounts and having conversations and image-sharing with others.” Williams also noted that Short appeared naive about the seriousness of his actions, emphasizing that he had established chat accounts to feed his compulsions.
The sentencing hearing was presided over by Recorder John Philpotts, who expressed concern over the circumstances of the arrest.
He highlighted that Short was apprehended at his workplace, which was a primary school, after police traced an indecent image uploaded to Instagram back to him.
During the arrest, Short handed over one phone, claiming it was his personal device, and attempted to retrieve his wife’s contact details from what he claimed was his work phone.
It was later confirmed that the phone contained indecent images, and that Short had installed data cleaning software, indicating an awareness of the illicit nature of his activities.
In his remarks, Recorder Philpotts stated, “You told officers you were trying to entrap people.
You have now sensibly abandoned what some would call an absurd account.” Ultimately, Short was sentenced to two years in prison.
Additionally, he was issued a sexual harm prevention order and disqualified from working with children indefinitely, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the potential risk to minors.
