SHOTTON MAN CARL MULLALLY JAILED FOR DISTRIBUTING CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN FLINTSHIRE

In February 2016, a man from Shotton, named Carl Mullally, was sentenced to a substantial prison term after a court found him guilty of possessing and distributing some of the most heinous child abuse images available. Mullally, aged 51 and formerly residing in Pentre Halkyn before moving to Salisbury Street in Shotton, was handed a 32-month prison sentence and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life. Additionally, the court imposed a lifelong sexual harm prevention order, emphasizing the severity of his crimes.

The presiding judge, Mr. Recorder Richard Williams, addressed Mullally directly, stating, “You have been an active participant in viewing and distributing images of the worst kind of child abuse.” The court heard that Mullally had admitted to 18 separate offenses committed over a brief period from December 9 to December 11, 2014. During this time, authorities discovered that he possessed approximately 10,000 indecent images and videos on his hard drive, which he had downloaded from the internet. These materials included some of the most extreme forms of child abuse, with the images and videos categorized into different levels of severity, including Category A, B, and C.

Prosecutor David Mainstone detailed the extent of the material found, revealing that the case involved 790 Category A images, 331 Category A videos, 1,008 Category B images, 142 Category B videos, 3,468 Category C images, and 108 Category C videos. Mullally not only admitted to possessing this material but also to sharing it with others, including a contact in India. The evidence indicated that he had downloaded these images from the internet and had actively distributed them through file-sharing platforms. When questioned about whether he found the images sexually gratifying, Mullally responded, “sometimes.”

The police executed a warrant at Mullally’s then-residence at Maes Lygan in Pentre Halkyn in December 2014, following intelligence that his email address was being used to access indecent images of children. During the search, a significant quantity of illicit material was uncovered, which was believed to have been accumulated over a decade. The investigation revealed that Mullally had stored the images on a hard drive and had even shared some with a friend in India. The court was told that Mullally had used a chat website to create a personal web page, where he engaged in online conversations with others who could access the images.

In his defense, Mullally’s solicitor, Stephen Edwards, described him as a man of good character who had trained as an electrical engineer at RAF Sealand and subsequently worked in the industry as an electrical engineer and fitter. Edwards highlighted that in recent years, Mullally’s health had deteriorated due to ME and he had suffered two serious heart attacks, rendering him unable to work. His living conditions were described as disheveled and unkempt, reflecting a lonely and isolated existence. Despite these circumstances, Edwards pointed out that Mullally was active in his local church and volunteered for the Flintshire Disability Forum, demonstrating a positive side to his character.

Edwards acknowledged that Mullally had recognized the harm caused by his actions, noting that he had ceased accessing such images for the past 14 months, complied with strict bail conditions, and had been open and honest with police and probation officers. The defense argued that Mullally was seeking rehabilitation and expressed remorse for his conduct.

The judge emphasized the gravity of Mullally’s involvement, noting that he had engaged in the distribution of images depicting significant abuse of children, some of whom were extremely young and vulnerable. The fact that these images portrayed such severe exploitation was considered an aggravating factor in the case. Ultimately, Mullally was sentenced to 32 months in prison, with the court also imposing a lifelong order to prevent him from reoffending or accessing similar material in the future.
