EX-BOXER FROM YORK JAILED FOR ASSAULT AT CHILD'S BIRTHDAY PARTY
A former professional boxer who punched his partner, his brother's wife and two other women at a children's birthday party in York has been jailed.Carl Huggins grabbed his partner by the hair and punched her in the face so hard that she collapsed to the floor.
The 33-year-old father-of-one also punched his brother's wife, her mother and her sister.
Injuries sustained by the women included a split lip, a cut to the eye and grazing and bruising to the arm.
York Magistrates' Court heard Huggins became increasingly "violent and erratic" during his nephew's birthday celebration on October 17 of the previous year.
Huggins lost control after the children had gone to bed, reportedly not caring who he may have hit due to exchange of hurtful words.
Police arrived after Huggins refused to leave the party and swore at officers from an upper window.
Huggins, who has a prior conviction for affray, admitted to police that he was "very drunk".
The attack caused the women to feel "upset and angry" according to his brother's mother-in-law.
On March 10, Huggins was sentenced to 16 weeks in jail after pleading guilty to four counts of assault by beating.
District Judge Adrian Lower acknowledged his guilty plea but stated he saw no reason to suspend the sentence.
The judge remarked, "You ruined what would've been a happy family occasion.
You put yourself in this position where you couldn't behave yourself.
This is an offence of domestic abuse.
Long gone are the days where authorities shrug off these offences.
The police care, the court cares." The injuries inflicted were described as painful and extremely embarrassing, with Huggins showing no remorse or pity.
He was ordered to serve at least half of his sentence before being eligible for release on licence.
The judge decided against ordering compensation, saying "I don't know where to begin to put a price on what you did to them." Huggins was also fined £120 as a victim surcharge and ordered to pay £85 in prosecution costs.
