FIFE MAN CAMERON WHITLEY JAILED FOR RAPE IN LEVEN AND STALKING IN BUCKHAVEN
Cameron Whitley, a 29-year-old resident of Sycamore Avenue in Methil, Fife, has been sentenced to prison after being convicted of a serious sexual assault that took place in Leven. The incident occurred in September 2019, when Whitley sexually assaulted a woman at a private residence.
The victim, who was intoxicated at the time, had only a brief acquaintance with Whitley, which makes the assault particularly troubling.
According to court records, Whitley had been out on a night out prior to the incident.
He then entered a taxi with the woman, and it was during this journey that the assault took place.
Whitley denied any involvement or wrongdoing throughout the trial.
However, the jury at the High Court in Edinburgh found him guilty of rape after considering the evidence presented.
Prosecutor Alan Cameron highlighted that Whitley had a prior conviction for stalking, which added weight to the case.
Following the guilty verdict, Judge Lord Weir ordered that Whitley be remanded in custody pending sentencing and requested a background report to be prepared.
In addition to the rape conviction, Whitley’s history of stalking was brought to light.
In February 2022, he appeared before Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court where he was admonished for a separate incident involving harassment.
During that case, it was revealed that Whitley had bombarded his ex-partner with an overwhelming 500 text messages over a span of just 12 days, from October 9 to October 21, 2021.
Whitley claimed that the excessive messaging was due to a speech-to-text feature on his phone malfunctioning.
He also made 111 phone calls to the woman, leaving multiple voicemails.
Whitley pleaded guilty to engaging in a course of conduct that caused his ex-partner to feel alarmed and distressed at her address in Buckhaven.
His defense solicitor, Martin Maguire, explained that Whitley’s dyslexia led him to use a voice-to-text app, which inadvertently caused his messages to be sent in large paragraphs, making them appear more frequent and intense than intended.
During the trial for the rape case, prosecutor Alan Cameron emphasized the predatory nature of Whitley’s actions.
He pointed out that the victim and Whitley had only just met when they entered the taxi, and that Whitley’s primary intention was to have sex with a woman he barely knew and had little interaction with prior to the assault.
Cameron urged the jury to find Whitley guilty, asserting that his behavior was conclusive evidence of rape.
Whitley is scheduled to be sentenced at the High Court in Aberdeen on October 3, 2023, where the full extent of his criminal actions will be formally addressed.
