CAREFULLY PLANNED ONLINE PREDATOR CAMERON STEVENS JAILED IN GLASGOW FOR SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING SCHOOLGIRLS
In September 2022, Cameron Stevens, a 23-year-old man from Glasgow's Pollok area, was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to a series of serious sexual offences involving underage girls.Stevens, who worked in a retail shop, had engaged in disturbing online predatory behavior targeting young girls both within the United Kingdom and across the Atlantic in the United States.
Stevens had established a disturbing pattern of communication with minors through social media platforms, notably using the chat application Kik.
His account, found on his iPad under the moniker "Your worst nightmare," was a clear indication of his sinister intentions.
Prosecutor Chris McKenna detailed how Stevens contacted females he did not know, gradually grooming them and then coercing them into performing sexual acts.
He also solicited explicit images from these young victims, many of whom were between nine and 15 years old.
The court heard that Stevens adopted a dominant role in these interactions, seeking to exploit the vulnerability of the girls.
His actions included requesting verification photographs to confirm their age, and much of the material he obtained and stored was of an explicit nature.
Police investigations uncovered a substantial volume of illicit content, including over 100 indecent photos and videos stored on his devices, which also included files saved via Dropbox and protected by passcodes.
Further probing revealed that Stevens had threatened to leak a compromising photo of one victim unless she continued to comply with his demands.
In one instance, a girl refused to carry out his instructions, prompting him to threaten her with exposure and to track her location, demonstrating his malicious intent to intimidate and control his victims.
Authorities linked Stevens to the initial charges in August 2019, which stemmed from the discovery of indecent images at his residence.
However, subsequent investigations expanded the scope of his offending, revealing that he had contacted multiple girls, some in the United States, through online pseudonyms.
Two of the victims, both residing in Scotland, were identified, but the identities of others remain unknown, only accessible through online usernames.
During the court proceedings, Lady Stacey emphasized the gravity of Stevens' actions, stating, "What you did has consequences for the young children involved.
This is not some victimless case.
I have to express society's disapproval for what you did.
We know that young girls go on the internet and we need to protect them." She also ordered that Stevens be supervised for an additional two years upon his release and placed him on the sex offenders register.
Despite his lawyer's plea for an alternative to imprisonment, citing complex personal issues, the judge concluded that a custodial sentence was the only appropriate response to the severity of his crimes.
Stevens will also be subject to ongoing monitoring and support to prevent further offending, reflecting the serious nature of his conduct and the need for societal protection.
