Violent Offender Calvin Wheldrake Sentenced for Assault Against Girlfriend

Calvin Wheldrake, 36, was involved in a violent assault against his girlfriend, leaving her with a serious eye injury that has significantly impacted her life. The incident occurred at their home in the early hours, where Wheldrake, under the influence of alcohol and cocaine, threatened to harm her and swung a bottle at her, which missed. He then assaulted her physically by striking her twice in the face, causing a laceration to her lower eyelid and damage to her eyelid and vision. The victim reported that Wheldrake's actions had 'ruined her life,' and she now feels unsafe in her home, constantly checking her surroundings. Wheldrake, who has a prior history of violence against women and other offences, admitted to assault causing actual bodily harm in court. He was sentenced to one year in jail and received a five-year restraining order. The judge described his actions as an abuse of trust and emphasized that only an immediate custodial sentence was appropriate.
