CALLUM TOWNSEND OF STOKE-ON-TRENT JAILED FOR SEX OFFENCES AGAINST TEENAGERS

Callum Townsend, a dangerous sex offender from Stoke-on-Trent, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after attempting to engage in sexual activities with a 15-year-old boy.

The 32-year-old, who has a troubling history of sexual offences, devised a deceptive scheme by pretending to be a 20-year-old woman named Amy in an effort to lure his young victim into meeting him for sexual purposes.

His offending occurred shortly after his release from prison on licence, raising serious concerns about his ongoing risk to the public.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard that Townsend also targeted another 15-year-old boy, requesting explicit images and using various alias names to communicate.

The court was informed that Townsend had a pattern of engaging in online chats with minors, often under false pretenses.

Prosecutor Hunter Gray detailed that Townsend was previously jailed for 38 months in 2021 on charges including causing a child to engage in sexual activity, actual sexual activity with a child, and failing to surrender to custody.

As part of his sentence, he was placed on the sex offenders' register and subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for life.

Despite this, Townsend was released on licence on November 18, 2022.

However, his freedom was short-lived.

On March 12 of the following year, police officers attended Townsend’s residence and confiscated his electronic devices, including an iPhone and an Acer laptop.

An investigation revealed that Townsend had accessed numerous apps not visible on his phone, such as gaming platforms, cryptocurrency applications, a Dropbox cloud service, and Telegram Messenger.

Further examination of his devices uncovered a series of messages exchanged with a 15-year-old boy between February 9 and March 2, 2023.

These messages had been deleted, but digital forensic analysis recovered the content.

Townsend had posed as a woman named Amy, claiming to be 20 years old, while the boy insisted he was only 15 and still in school.

Townsend requested explicit images from the boy, who responded by sending a video of a couple engaged in sexual activity.

Townsend also inquired if the boy used Telegram, a more secure messaging app, and they arranged to meet for sexual activity.

During their online interactions, Townsend sent images of a woman and continued to pretend to be Amy.

He persistently asked the boy to send a picture of his lower body and even requested him to remove his shorts.

It was established that Townsend’s communications breached the conditions of his SHPO, which prohibited contact with individuals under 16.

He actively sought to meet a minor for sexual purposes, demonstrating a clear violation of the restrictions imposed upon him.

In addition to these offences, Townsend used aliases such as Nevexx200 on Snapchat and another pseudonym to message other individuals, sending images of a blonde woman and encouraging recipients to send their own images.

His actions underscored a pattern of manipulative and predatory online behaviour.

Townsend, who has no fixed address, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including breaching his SHPO, arranging a child sexual offence, and failing to comply with the notification requirements of the sex offenders' register.

His legal counsel, Robert Holt, acknowledged Townsend’s extensive criminal record and the fact that he had cooperated with authorities by pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity.

Holt also highlighted that Townsend was on licence and had been recalled to prison following his arrest.

Holt emphasized that the period of offending was relatively short and pointed out that Townsend’s actions involved a significant age disparity, with the victim being only 15.

He noted that Townsend’s autism and ADHD were factors in his behaviour, which involved grooming and attempts to obtain images from minors.

Despite these issues, Holt mentioned that Townsend had not previously accessed accredited rehabilitation programmes but expressed optimism about his willingness to comply with the Horizon sex offender programme.

He also noted that Townsend had used his time in custody productively, completing the first year of an Open University degree in business management.

Holt stressed that Townsend recognized his behaviour as inappropriate and acknowledged the need for substantial behavioural change.

He described Townsend’s pattern of offending as a 'revolving door' but expressed hope that he would not reoffend in the future.

Judge Graeme Smith addressed Townsend directly, stating, “Upon your release on licence, there was a rapid and concerning return to some of your previous activities.

You posed as a younger female and engaged in online communication with a 15-year-old boy.

You used multiple aliases, including Neve, to contact others.

You attempted to obtain sexual images and proposed meeting the boy for sexual activity, despite knowing he was under 16.

It was obvious to anyone that you were not a 20-year-old woman but a 32-year-old man.

Your sexual interest in teenage boys is clear, and you even encouraged the boy to recruit others into your activities.” The judge concluded that Townsend was a dangerous offender, given his sexual preoccupations and attraction to minors.

His extended sentence comprises five years in custody followed by an additional five years on extended licence.

He is required to serve at least two-thirds of his custodial term before being considered for release, reflecting the serious nature of his offences and the ongoing risk he poses to society.
