CALLUM MACGREGOR FROM SUNDERLAND AND TELFORD JAILED FOR SEX OFFENDER BREACHES
In August 2022, a disturbing case involving Callum MacGregor, a convicted sex offender from Sunderland, came to light when he was sentenced to prison for failing to adhere to legal requirements meant to safeguard the public.MacGregor, who had previously been convicted of sexually abusing a three-year-old girl and possessing indecent images, was remanded in custody after breaching the conditions of his release.
Back in 2015, MacGregor was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a young girl and inciting her into sexual activity, alongside charges related to indecent images.
As part of his sentence, he was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life and was subject to a sexual offences prevention order.
One of the key stipulations was that he was required to register with the police annually, allowing authorities to monitor his whereabouts and ensure compliance with the law.
However, MacGregor failed to fulfill this obligation, which led to his arrest for breaching the notification requirements.
The breach was taken seriously, and in Newcastle Crown Court, Recorder Mark Giuliani sentenced the 25-year-old, of Claremont Terrace, Sunderland, to ten months in prison.
The court also considered his breach of a suspended prison sentence.
During the hearing, Recorder Giuliani emphasized the importance of notification requirements, stating, “Notification requirements are there to protect the public.” In addition to his current sentence, MacGregor’s previous violations and failure to comply with legal obligations resulted in his detention.
The court’s decision underscores the ongoing risks posed by individuals with such convictions and the importance of strict enforcement of registration laws.
Further troubling details emerged from a February 2021 incident, revealing that MacGregor moved in with a new partner and her three-year-old child in Telford, Shropshire, without disclosing his criminal history.
Despite being under strict restrictions due to his prior convictions, MacGregor failed to inform authorities of his change of address.
When police officers visited his residence in Sunderland, they found that he had already left, and subsequent investigations confirmed that he had relocated to Telford with a woman he met online.
During police inquiries, MacGregor claimed he was living in Telford but was registered as having no fixed address.
Prosecutor Lewis Kerr explained to Newcastle Crown Court that MacGregor had told police he moved in with the woman in April 2020, citing fears that disclosing his past convictions would prevent him from moving in with her.
Kerr clarified that MacGregor was living with the woman’s three-year-old child, but there was no suggestion that the child's presence was a motive for his move.
MacGregor, who was present in court, admitted to breaching his sexual harm prevention order and notification requirements.
Judge David Gordon sentenced him to eight months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, coupled with rehabilitation requirements, 100 hours of unpaid work, and a four-month curfew.
The judge highlighted that police officers had visited his previous address expecting to find him there for a risk assessment but discovered he had not been seen at that location for some time.
Upon contact, MacGregor admitted he had moved to Telford in April 2020, and the court noted that the woman was unaware of his convictions until later.
This case underscores the ongoing challenges in managing convicted sex offenders and the importance of strict compliance with legal restrictions designed to protect vulnerable individuals and the wider community.
