During a hearing at Truro Crown Court, 24-year-old Caleb Empett was sentenced to 18 months in prison after he was found guilty of causing actual bodily harm and assaulting his partner in a violent, prolonged attack that lasted approximately an hour. The incident took place on June 17, 2023, in Troon, Cornwall. Empett, who has a history of anger issues, started destroying property in their flat after his partner returned home with food. Prosecutor Edward Bailey detailed the assault, stating that Empett threw objects, punched his partner in the head and all over her body, and strangled her to the point where she had difficulty breathing. The assault escalated as he kicked and stamped on her with steel toe cap boots. Bailey explained that Empett continued his violence by smashing belongings and furniture, pulling his partner off the bed and causing her to land on broken glass. The court heard that Empett only stopped when he became physically exhausted, with his hands severely injured and feeling sick from headbutting fixtures. The victim, who sought refuge with a friend and spent the night in hospital, conveyed in a victim impact statement her love for Empett despite the violence and her hope that he will seek mental health support. Empett admitted to causing actual bodily harm, citing mental health issues as a factor and denying any intent to be violent. His defense team emphasized the possibility of rehabilitation. However, the judge described the attack as 'really appalling' and imposed an 18-month custodial sentence along with a 10-year restraining order. Empett will serve 40% of his sentence before being eligible for release on licence.
