Buckie Rapist
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Buckie and the wider Moray region, Bryan Reid, a 46-year-old resident of The Old Mariners House in the Yardie area of Buckie, was found to have downloaded and stored an astonishing number of child abuse images over a period of nearly eight years. The authorities uncovered that Reid possessed a staggering total of 521,395 indecent images depicting young girls ranging from newborns to 15-year-olds, along with nearly five days’ worth of indecent videos, all stored across multiple digital devices at his Buckie home.
During the proceedings at Elgin Sheriff Court, Procurator Fiscal Alex Swain detailed the extent of Reid’s illicit collection. It was revealed that Reid had meticulously organized his material into specifically named folders, with labels such as “best of,” “pre-teen,” and “keepers,” indicating a systematic approach to his disturbing collection. The court was informed that the investigation was still ongoing, as the devices seized from Reid’s residence contained more images that had not yet been manually reviewed, suggesting the full extent of his activities might be even greater.
Sheriff Gary Aitken decided to defer sentencing until May 17, allowing time for social work and psychological reports to be prepared. Reid was placed on the sex offenders’ register and was released on bail pending further proceedings.
Miss Swain recounted that police officers arrived at Reid’s Buckie home while he was visiting his nephew in the town. When confronted about the nature of the inquiry, Reid reportedly responded, “I am the one who is involved. I always knew I would get caught.” The police then conducted a thorough search of his residence, which revealed a significant amount of digital evidence. The devices included a computer tower with four hard drives, an additional 14 hard drives, and eight USB sticks, all containing illicit material.
Analysis of these devices confirmed the presence of a vast quantity of indecent images. The police found 5,270 images classified as Category A, which are considered the most graphic and depict acts of rape and torture involving children. There were also 6,468 images in Category B and 509,657 in Category C, which are less severe but still highly disturbing. In addition, 1,395 indecent videos were recovered, including 189 in Category A, 98 in Category B, and 1,108 in Category C. The total runtime of these videos was estimated at nearly five days, specifically four days and 23 hours.
The investigation highlighted the enormous scale of Reid’s activities, with authorities stating that the analysis of his devices would take months to complete fully. It was also noted that there were additional images that had not yet been manually reviewed, indicating the potential for even more material to be uncovered.
Reid admitted to charges of taking, permitting, or making indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children, as well as possessing such material. These offenses were committed at his Buckie residence and elsewhere between October 1, 2009, and August 9 of the previous year. On August 9, Reid was cautioned and formally charged. He appeared in private at Elgin Sheriff Court, where he chose not to enter a plea and was remanded for further examination as the investigation continues.
