BRYAN HUGGINS AND SHOCKING GROOMING PLOTS IN WARWICKSHIRE AND SWANSEA

Bryan Huggins, a 72-year-old man from Warwickshire, engaged in a disturbing series of criminal acts involving online grooming and planning an illicit encounter with a minor.

The court proceedings revealed that Huggins had arranged to meet what he believed was a 13-year-old girl at a Tesco supermarket located in Swansea, but the entire interaction was part of a calculated sting by a vigilante group targeting online predators.

According to the court, Huggins had initially contacted a fake profile on a dating website, which was actually run by an online paedophile hunter group seeking to catch offenders.

The profile was operated by members posing as an 18-year-old woman but was later revealed to be a decoy.

The defendant and the decoy exchanged mobile numbers and began covert communication through WhatsApp.

Over subsequent days, Huggins sent explicitly sexual messages describing his intentions, including performing a full-body massage, touching the girl’s breasts and genitals, and using a vibrator.

He also expressed a desire to wash her back in the shower and asked her to send nude photographs.

On April 7 of this year, Huggins contacted the decoy's profile and made arrangements to travel from his residence in Warwickshire to Swansea, booking a stay at the Hurst Dene Aparthotel in the Uplands district.

As part of his plan, he instructed the girl to meet him at a Tesco on Oystermouth Road in Swansea, instructing her to pretend to be his granddaughter so as not to attract suspicion from store employees or customers.

The following day, on April 12, Huggins traveled to Swansea and checked into his hotel room.

Later, he proceeded to the designated meeting point where he was met by members of the vigilante group behind the fake profile.

It was at this point that police intervened, leading to his arrest.

The authorities conducted a thorough search of his hotel room and his vehicle.

During the search of the hotel room, officers discovered numerous items indicative of his intent and preparations for abuse.

These included massage oil, Viagra tablets, a vibrator, a hairdryer, and a computer memory stick containing erotic fiction that was authored by Huggins himself.

Additionally, they found a laptop computer and other personal items.

In Huggins' car parked nearby, police found an audiobook narrating a story about a schoolgirl who was abducted, a roll of heavy-duty tape often associated with restraint, and a diary containing flight numbers and detailed notes.

During police interviews, Huggins openly admitted his intentions.

He disclosed that he wanted to give the girl a full-body massage, further admitted he planned to touch her breasts and genitals, and expressed a desire to use the vibrator on her.

The revelation paints a disturbing picture of his malicious intent.

Huggins, identified as residing on The Green in Mancetter, Atherstone, Warwickshire, had previously pleaded guilty to attempting to incite a girl to engage in sexual activity when brought before Swansea Crown Court.

His criminal record includes four previous convictions spanning 13 offences, none of which were of a sexual nature.

Representing Huggins, lawyer Andrew Evans emphasized his client's willingness to cooperate with court-ordered programs to better understand the underlying motivations and compulsions behind his actions.

The prosecution, however, painted a more serious picture.

The judge, Huw Rees, addressed Huggins directly, emphasizing the gravity of his grooming behavior.

The judge noted that Huggins had deliberately targeted what he believed was a 13-year-old girl and had traveled a significant distance from Warwickshire to Swansea with the intent to abuse.

Judge Rees also pointed out that the material found in Huggins’ possession, including the story about an abducted schoolgirl, demonstrated his disturbing mindset.

The court recognized the potential long-term harm his actions could have caused to any child involved.

Consequently, and in accordance with sentencing guidelines, Huggins received a prison term of 16 months.

Due to his guilty plea, he benefited from a one-third reduction in his sentence.

He is expected to serve up to half of that time behind bars before being released on license, with the remainder to be served in the community under supervision.

Additionally, Huggins will be registered as a sex offender for the next ten years and is subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same period.
