BRYAN HANDLEY JAILED FOR ABUSE IN LONDON CARE HOME
In a case that has shocked the community and brought to light the dark history of abuse within care institutions, Bryan Handley, a former care worker from London, has been sentenced to prison for his heinous crimes.The offenses took place at Orchard Lodge, a secure children’s home located in Anerley, during the 1980s, a period marked by inadequate safeguarding measures and troubling oversight.
Handley, who resided on Lower Road, SE8, was employed at the facility during that decade.
His role involved caring for vulnerable children, but instead of providing support and protection, he exploited his position to commit serious sexual offenses against two teenage boys.
The victims, now adults, courageously came forward years later to recount the abuse they endured during their time at Orchard Lodge.
The first victim, a former resident, approached the police in April 2011, revealing that he had been subjected to sexual abuse by Handley.
Due to the victim’s bravery, law enforcement officials from the Metropolitan Police’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command launched an investigation.
Through meticulous examination of staff records and interviews with witnesses who had worked at the care home during the 1980s, authorities were able to identify Bryan Handley as the perpetrator.
Following this, a second victim stepped forward in May 2011, providing similar allegations of abuse.
The police’s investigation gained momentum, and by October of that year, officers had successfully located and arrested Handley.
Despite the arrest, legal proceedings took several years to unfold, with the defendant not being formally charged until July 2015.
In October 2016, after a comprehensive trial, Bryan Handley was found guilty of multiple serious charges.
The court convicted him on two counts of buggery and four counts of indecent assault, all committed against boys aged 14 and 15 at the time of the offenses.
The verdict marked a significant step in delivering justice for the victims and highlighted the importance of accountability within institutions entrusted with the care of children.
