BRUCE THOMAS WAYNE JAILED IN SWINDON FOR BREACHING COURT ORDER WHILE ATTEMPTING TO WORK WITH VULNERABLE TEENAGERS
A registered sex offender, Bruce Thomas Wayne, 33, was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison at Swindon Crown Court after he violated a court order by attempting to volunteer with a community charity that supports individuals aged 14 to 70.Wayne, of Watermint Way, Calne, had previously been convicted in 2010 and was subject to a sexual harm prevention order imposed in October 2020, following concerns about his behavior.
The order prohibited him from engaging in voluntary or paid work without notifying his probation officer and from being involved with support groups for children or adults.
Despite these restrictions, Wayne began volunteering at a local charity, which had a policy of supervising all volunteers until a criminal background check was completed.
The charity promptly reported Wayne to Wiltshire Police after recognizing him from a news story about his prior conviction.
Wiltshire Police described him as "a calculating and predatory offender." Police revealed that his attempt to volunteer was detected when someone recognized him from media coverage.
PC Sarah Greenman commented: "Wayne tried to claim that he had misunderstood the terms of his order, but the judge rejected this claim, finding that what he was actually doing was trying to gain access to vulnerable teenagers.
Registered sex offenders are subject to regular monitoring by the police and I hope this case provides reassurance that if and when they try to breach any restrictions that are in place, then they are dealt with robustly by the police and the courts." Wiltshire Police commended the responsible actions of the Calne-based charity for their diligence in ensuring Wayne could not work unsupervised until background checks were completed.
