BRIAN SLEE FROM PONTYPRIDD SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN CARDIFF
In August 2018, a disturbing case of child sexual abuse came to light involving Brian Slee, a resident of Pontypridd, who was convicted of heinous acts committed against an eight-year-old girl. The incident took place in Cardiff, where Slee targeted the young victim with a series of appalling actions that have left a lasting impact on her and her family.According to court proceedings, Slee lured the girl by offering her sweets from his backpack. During the encounter, he took a sweet out of his bag, covered his groin area with a cloth, and placed the sweet on his groin, instructing the child to suck on it. The court heard that when the girl objected to this behavior, Slee responded dismissively, telling her it was 'tough' and warning her that she would not receive any ice cream if she refused to comply.
The young girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, later described the sweet as a 'sucky pop' during police interviews. Prosecutor Suzanne Thomas explained that the abuse occurred in September of the previous year. She detailed that Slee had shown the girl videos on his phone, which depicted other children engaging in similar acts, further illustrating the disturbing nature of his misconduct.
During her police interview, the girl expressed her reluctance and discomfort, which Slee dismissed by insisting it was 'tough.' Her mother, upon learning of the incident, was described as 'distraught' by the court. The girl’s detailed account of the abuse was noted by Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, who remarked on the child's 'extremely detailed' descriptions.
Following the incident, Slee handed himself in at a police station but claimed he had lost his phone en route. However, the court found this to be a deliberate attempt to hinder police investigation, as the judge stated, 'I am satisfied that you deliberately discarded it to prevent the police from having access to it.' Evidence collected at the scene included a sheet with stains matching Slee’s DNA, further implicating him.
In a victim impact statement read in court, the girl’s mother expressed the profound effect the abuse had on her family, stating, '[This] has turned our world upside down. She has not had the childhood she deserves.' She added that her daughter had become emotional, and her eating and sleeping patterns had been severely affected before she disclosed the abuse.
Brian Slee, aged 56 and residing on Tyfica Road in Pontypridd, denied charges of raping a child and sexually assaulting a child. Despite his denial, a jury found him guilty after a trial. The court acknowledged the vulnerability of the young victim, emphasizing her age as a significant factor in the case.
Judge Lloyd-Clarke sentenced Slee to 15 years in prison and imposed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order to protect others from potential future offenses. The case highlights the serious nature of child sexual abuse and the importance of justice for victims in Cardiff and beyond.
