SWALESE PAEDOPHILE BRIAN RHYS SENTENCED FOR DECADES OF ABUSE IN SWANSEA
In October 2019, a disturbing case unfolded at Swansea Crown Court involving Brian Rhys, a man from Swansea with a disturbing history of abusing young boys over a span of nearly three decades.Rhys, aged 53 at the time of sentencing, was found guilty of a series of heinous crimes that included 11 counts of indecency with a child, five counts of indecent assault of a male, five counts of serious sexual assault, 12 counts of raping a child under the age of 13, an additional count of sexual assault of a child under 13, and one count of witness intimidation.
Details of the case revealed that Rhys had systematically groomed two young boys, exploiting their trust and innocence.
The court heard how he showered the victims with gifts and manipulated them into a false sense of security before committing the sexual offences.
The abuse spanned from 1982 to 2018, highlighting a long history of predatory behavior.
During the proceedings, one of the victims delivered an emotional statement, sharing the profound impact of the abuse.
The individual stated, “I have had to carry this deep dark secret since being abused during childhood for more than 30 years.
It is a heavy burden to bear and has affected my life and my mental health.
Despite all that, I know when he is convicted, it brings a new chapter in my life.
I will now look forward instead of back.
The secret is a secret no more.” The second victim also provided a heartfelt account, expressing relief and a sense of justice.
They said, “When I was told by my mother that the defendant had been convicted, I felt very happy and slept well that night.
It was the best I had slept since I can remember.
What he did affected my confidence and my schooling and caused stress and anxiety.
I feel absolutely terrible about the things he did to me.” Judge Paul Thomas QC delivered a stern sentence, condemning Rhys’s actions and character.
He stated, “Over a period of around 30 years, you systematically and calculatedly sexually violated two young boys.
In each case, you used the trust placed in you to look after them to facilitate your wicked ends, grooming them and showering them with gifts before raping them over a long period of time.
It is evident from your evidence that you are wholly unrepentant.
You maintain your innocence for your family’s sake.
You are manipulative and arrogant, believing you could deceive everyone.
Your sexual preferences are deep-rooted, and it is clear you have a lust for young boys.” Rhys, who resides on Banwell Street in Morriston, Swansea, was sentenced to a 30-year extended prison term, consisting of 24 years behind bars and an additional six years on extended licence.
Furthermore, a sexual harm prevention order was imposed, and he is required to sign the sex offenders register, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
The case underscores the devastating impact of long-term abuse and the importance of justice for victims in Swansea and beyond.
