EDINBURGH MAN BRIAN REID JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND EVIDENCE CONCEALMENT
In a disturbing case that has shocked the Edinburgh community, Brian Reid, a 63-year-old resident of the city, has been sentenced to eight months in prison after being found guilty of possessing and attempting to conceal indecent images of children. The incident came to light following a police raid on Reid’s home in the Shandon area of Edinburgh last year, which uncovered a disturbing collection of child abuse material.
Reid’s computer devices contained a total of 397 still images and 387 videos depicting the sexual abuse of children aged between six and twelve years old.
These images and videos were discovered during a search carried out by law enforcement officers who had obtained a warrant based on intelligence suggesting illegal activity at his residence.
The police’s investigation revealed that Reid had been actively viewing these illicit materials, which included some of the most severe categories of child exploitation, specifically 44 images classified as Category A, indicating the most depraved content, along with 40 in Category B and 313 in Category C.
Further analysis of Reid’s electronic devices, including a laptop, a USB stick, and an SD card, uncovered a disturbing pattern of behavior.
It was found that Reid had employed a covert “cleaner app,” a software designed to delete files after they have been viewed, in an apparent attempt to hide his activities.
However, cybercrime investigators were able to recover all the deleted images and videos from the devices, revealing the full extent of his illegal collection.
During his court appearance at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last month, Reid pleaded guilty to two charges: possession of indecent images of children and taking or allowing the images to be taken at his home between June 27 and October 20 of the previous year.
The court was informed that Reid had admitted ownership of the devices and his use of the “cleaner app” to attempt to erase evidence of his crimes.
On the day of sentencing, Sheriff Daniel Kelly acknowledged Reid’s remorse and noted that he had been attending sessions with the organization Stop It Now, which aims to prevent child abuse.
Despite this, the sheriff emphasized the seriousness of the offenses, particularly highlighting that some of the images were classified as Category A, representing the most severe form of abuse.
Sheriff Kelly also pointed out that Reid had attempted to conceal evidence through the use of the cleaner app, which contributed to the severity of his sentence.
Reid was sentenced to eight months in prison and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years.
The court proceedings revealed that police had responded swiftly after receiving intelligence about the illegal activity at Reid’s residence.
On October 20 last year, officers arrived at his home in Edinburgh with a search warrant, leading to the seizure of his electronic devices and the subsequent discovery of the illicit material.
The investigation also uncovered internet file names on Reid’s devices, including labels such as “12-year-old boy,” “seven-year-old and 10-year-old,” and “pre-teen HC,” which further underscored the disturbing nature of his activities.
Reid’s interview with police confirmed his ownership of the devices and his use of the “cleaner app” to attempt to destroy traces of the images after viewing them.
His guilty plea to charges of taking and possessing indecent images of children reflects the gravity of his actions and the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat child exploitation in Edinburgh and beyond.
