BRAIN PAWSON'S SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IMAGE SCANDAL IN BARNSTAPLE

In November 2019, a disturbing case emerged involving Brian Pawson, a man residing in Barnstaple, who was found to have engaged in the possession and distribution of child abuse images despite suffering from severe agoraphobia that kept him confined to his home.

The investigation was initiated after police in North Yorkshire identified one of his Skype contacts, which ultimately led them to his flat in Barnstaple.

Authorities conducted a thorough search of Pawson’s residence, seizing a Dell computer and two Acer laptops.

Digital forensic experts recovered a total of 329 illicit images and eight videos from his devices.

Among these, 47 images were classified in the most severe category, depicting children aged between one and 13 years old suffering serious abuse inflicted by adults.

The material included children of both genders, highlighting the disturbing nature of his online activities.

The police investigation revealed that the images dated back to as early as 2011, with Pawson continuing to download such material up until just three days before the raid.

Prosecutors detailed that his internet searches involved highly inappropriate terms, including phrases like 'pre-teen' and 'boys,' as well as a particularly disturbing query: 'dad sneaks into child's bed.' These searches indicated a pattern of interest in child exploitation, which Pawson initially denied during police interviews, claiming he had no sexual interest in children and that his actions were driven by curiosity stemming from past abuse he suffered as a child.

At Exeter Crown Court, Pawson, aged 69 and residing at Valley Close, Barnstaple, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children.

Judge David Evans sentenced him to 20 months in prison, suspended for two years.

Additionally, Pawson was ordered to complete 30 hours of sex offender treatment, placed on the sex offenders register for ten years, and subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same period.

This order grants authorities the authority to monitor his internet activity to prevent further offenses.

During the sentencing, the judge emphasized the seriousness of Pawson’s online behavior, stating, “There is clear evidence you had been sharing your interest in child images with like-minded individuals online.

When you were interviewed, you implausibly denied having any sexual interest in children.” Defence lawyer Mr.

Thomas Faulkner highlighted Pawson’s mental health struggles, noting his severe agoraphobia, stress, and anxiety, which confined him to his home and required assistance from mental health carers to leave.

Faulkner explained that Pawson’s actions occurred during a period of loneliness and social isolation, and that he now feels disgust and shame over his conduct.

He added, “In 2011, he bought a computer to connect with others online, but unfortunately, he started communicating with the wrong people and received these abusive images.

He recognizes the wrongfulness of his actions and states that nobody feels more disgusted than he does.” Overall, the case underscores the ongoing concerns about online child exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to combat such heinous crimes, even when the offender’s mental health issues complicate the picture.
