A man identified as Brian Lines has been handed a severe prison sentence of 31 years after being convicted of a total of 29 sexual offences.
The sentencing took place at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Tuesday, 21 May, where the 84-year-old resident of Leek, Staffordshire, was formally sentenced to 30 years of imprisonment, complemented by an extended license period of one additional year.
This comprehensive sentence reflects the gravity of his crimes and the court’s determination to ensure justice.
In addition to his prison term, Lines was subjected to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a measure designed to restrict his activities and prevent further harm.
Furthermore, he will be registered on the Sex Offenders Register for the remainder of his life, signifying the ongoing monitoring and restrictions placed upon him due to the nature of his offences.
The charges against Lines encompass a wide range of serious sexual crimes committed over a span of nearly four decades, from 1970 to 2009, all within Staffordshire.
The offences include three counts of raping a female under the age of 16, three counts of raping a female over 16, attempted rape of a girl under 16, and a total of 16 counts of indecent assault on girls under 16.
Additionally, he was convicted of four counts of sexual assault, assault of a girl under 13 by touching, and engaging in sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15.
The crimes came to light in August 2021, when reports were made, prompting a swift investigation by Staffordshire police.
Following the reports, Lines was arrested shortly thereafter.
An extensive investigation conducted by the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences team led to his formal charging in January 2023.
The trial, which concluded earlier this month, saw a jury find him guilty of all charges, despite his initial denials.
DC Annie Blairs, a member of the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences team, commented on the case, emphasizing the importance of the victims’ bravery.
She stated, “The sentence was only possible thanks to the sheer determination and bravery of Lines’ victims.
Despite denying the offences, a jury saw through his lies and he will now spend the rest of his life in prison.” She further added, “The impact on the victims is significant and long-lasting, and I hope this sentence provides some comfort in knowing they did the right thing in reporting his heinous crimes to us.
We are committed to investigating those who carry out sexual offences, bringing them before the courts so that they can face justice, while supporting victims.”
