BRIAN JOHNSON FROM BARROW CAUGHT BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS IN BLACKPOOL
In a significant operation that highlights the ongoing efforts to combat online child exploitation, a man from Barrow, identified as Brian Michael Johnson, has been sentenced to prison after attempting to engage in sexual activity with a minor. The incident unfolded in July 2018, when Johnson traveled from his hometown of Barrow to Blackpool, believing he was about to meet a young girl he had been communicating with through social media.
Johnson was arrested at Blackpool North Railway Station on July 27, 2018, by officers from the British Transport Police.
Unbeknownst to him, he had been targeted and lured by a team of dedicated paedophile hunters who had set up an online decoy posing as a child.
These volunteers operate in separate groups—one acting as the decoy to attract potential offenders, and another coordinating the confrontation and arrest.
The social networking site Bebo was used by Johnson to groom what he believed was a schoolgirl.
In reality, the decoy was an adult member of the Forbidden child protection group, designed to catch individuals attempting to exploit minors online.
Johnson’s intent to meet the decoy in Blackpool was part of his attempt to carry out a sexual act with a minor, which he believed was under 16.
Following the arrest, authorities shared information with local enforcement, leading to Johnson’s detention and subsequent charges.
He faced serious allegations of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and attempting to meet a girl under the age of 16 following sexual grooming.
The case was prosecuted by the British Transport Police, who confirmed the details of the operation.
Johnson was remanded in custody at Preston Prison, where he awaited trial.
On Friday, just eleven days before his 60th birthday, he was sentenced to 24 months in prison.
In addition to his incarceration, Johnson received a 10-year Sexual Harm Protection Order, which restricts his contact with minors and requires him to register as a sex offender for a decade.
Upon release, he is prohibited from having any contact with children under 16, reflecting the severity of his offenses and the ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable minors from exploitation.
