BRIAN HEDGE SHAMES YORK WITH PUBLIC EXPOSE ON HIS WAY TO SCHOOL
In October 2014, a disturbing incident involving Brian Hedge, a 68-year-old resident of York, drew significant attention from local authorities and the community.Hedge was found to have engaged in indecent behavior by exposing himself in a manner that was clearly visible to passersby, including children on their way to school.
The incident took place in the hallway of his residence, located on Wilberforce Avenue in the Clifton area of York, where he deliberately positioned himself behind a net curtain in his front door window, pulling it back to make his actions visible.
At the time of the offense, two workmen in a vehicle parked on the busy street observed Hedge’s inappropriate conduct.
The street was bustling with parents and children heading to school, making the exposure particularly alarming and unacceptable.
This was not an isolated incident for Hedge, as records show he had committed a similar offense in April 2013.
The court was informed that Hedge has a lengthy history of sexual offenses, which added to the seriousness of his latest behavior.
During the hearing at York Magistrates Court, District Judge Adrian Lower addressed Hedge directly, condemning his actions as thoroughly anti-social and deliberately carried out for his own gratification.
The judge emphasized the recklessness of Hedge’s behavior, noting that he must have been aware that his residence was in a location with frequent foot traffic, including vulnerable schoolchildren.
The judge’s words underscored the gravity of the offense and the potential harm caused to the community.
As a consequence, Hedge was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison, but this sentence was suspended for two years.
The court imposed strict conditions, including two years of supervision and mandatory participation in a sex offender treatment program.
Hedge, who resides on Wilberforce Avenue in Clifton, pleaded guilty to the charge of indecent exposure.
He is registered as a sex offender, and the probation service has assessed him as highly likely to reoffend, raising concerns about ongoing risk.
Hedge’s solicitor, Chris McGrogan, provided some context for his client’s situation, describing him as a lonely man suffering from poor health and depression.
McGrogan explained that Hedge feels isolated and lonely, which may have contributed to his behavior.
However, he also pointed out that Hedge had not reoffended during the period of supervision following his previous community order in April 2013, suggesting some level of compliance and remorse.
Despite this, the court’s decision reflected the seriousness of the offense and the need to protect the community from future harm.
