BRAIN GREENWOOD FROM DAREN JAILED FOR 11 YEARS OVER SEXUAL ABUSE IN DARWEN
In a case that has shocked the community of Darwen, Brian Greenwood, a 39-year-old resident of Bank Street, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 11 years after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offences. The conviction stems from a series of disturbing incidents involving a young girl, which the court described as systematic abuse that inflicted significant psychological trauma on the victim.Greenwood's criminal history is extensive, with a total of 36 previous offences, including an earlier conviction for indecent assault during the 1980s. During that period, he was also placed on a two-year probation. The recent charges against him included six counts of attempted rape and additional sexual offences, all of which were committed over a span of several years, highlighting a pattern of predatory behaviour.
The case was heard at Preston Crown Court, where the court was informed of Greenwood's past and the gravity of his recent crimes. The defence, led by barrister Simon Mintz, acknowledged the seriousness of the offences but emphasized that they were not accompanied by violence or threats. Mintz also pointed out that Greenwood had himself suffered abuse as a child, which he suggested might have contributed to his actions. Despite this, Greenwood maintained his innocence, denying all allegations and asserting that he would continue to do so.
Judge Pamela Badley delivered the sentence, emphasizing the emotional and powerful testimony provided by the victim. The court accepted her account of the abuse, describing it as systematic and repeated over a period of time. The judge highlighted the profound psychological harm inflicted, noting that the victim's evidence was compelling and accepted by the jury. Greenwood's claims that the allegations were fabricated were dismissed as unfounded.
As part of his sentence, Greenwood will be required to register as a sex offender indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions. The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Darwen, raising awareness about the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals and the serious consequences of such heinous crimes.
