BRAIN GARDINER FROM STOCKTON SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL ABUSE IN TEESSIDE
In a case that has shocked the local community, Brian Gardiner, a resident of Stockton, has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison for a prolonged and disturbing campaign of sexual abuse against two young girls.The offences, which spanned several years, involved a series of heinous acts that have left lasting scars on the victims.
Gardiner, who lived on Ragpath Lane in Stockton, was found guilty of multiple charges, including engaging in sexual activity with a child, sexual assault of a girl under the age of 13, sexual assault of a girl aged between 13 and 15, and inciting or causing sexual activity with a minor.
The court heard that Gardiner's abuse was not limited to a single incident but was a persistent pattern of predatory behavior.
One of the victims, who was subjected to Gardiner’s abuse over several years, recounted how he repeatedly exposed himself to her and attempted to coerce her into touching his genitals.
On one occasion, he sexually assaulted her, but she managed to push him away and escape the situation.
The emotional and psychological toll of these experiences has been profound.
The victim, in a heartfelt statement read to the court, revealed that she has struggled with severe psychological issues since the abuse, including social anxiety and suicidal thoughts.
She expressed her fear of reporting Gardiner earlier, fearing she would not be believed, which delayed justice for years.
Despite her courage in coming forward, the legal process was painfully slow.
It took over three and a half years from the initial report to reach sentencing, a delay that the judge, Deborah Sherwin, described as “wholly unacceptable.” During the sentencing hearing, she expressed her bewilderment at the lengthy delay, questioning why such a case would take so long to resolve and emphasizing the inexcusable nature of the delay.
Gardiner admitted to the charges during police interviews, including the abuse of the girl and an additional disturbing confession of asking another child, aged only nine or ten, to touch his genitals.
The court was told that Gardiner’s actions were “appalling,” and the judge made it clear that the victims should not feel guilty in any way.
She emphasized that Gardiner was solely responsible for his actions.
In her sentencing, Judge Sherwin sentenced Gardiner to five years and ten months in prison.
Additionally, she imposed a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order to monitor and restrict his activities moving forward.
The case has left a lasting impact on the victims and the community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and swift justice in cases of child abuse.
