BRIAN FENNY AND HORRIFIC CRIMES IN DURHAM AND STOCKTON
A man identified as Brian Fenny has begun serving a lengthy prison sentence after committing a series of violent and disturbing crimes in Durham, Stockton, and surrounding areas.His actions included terrifying assaults, sustained stalking, and sexual violence that left a woman traumatised and fearful for her life.
The victim, who has chosen to remain anonymous to protect her privacy, described her ordeal as one that she will never forget.
She expressed her relief and a sense of justice being served as Fenny was brought to face the consequences of his heinous acts.
In a heartfelt statement, she conveyed a message of reassurance to other women, asserting that "The women of Stockton are now safe," and emphasizing that help is available for those enduring similar situations.
According to her account, she endured physical, mental, and sexual abuse at Fenny’s hands, with one of the most harrowing incidents occurring on a night when he managed to infiltrate her home through an open window while she was asleep.
During this terrifying episode, Fenny strangled her with a belt, leading her to believe she was about to die.
She recounted feeling her life flashing before her as her attacker decided to tighten the belt around her neck.
Remarkably, she managed to summon the strength to reach the window and scream for help, an act that ultimately thwarted further violence.
The assault did not end there.
The court heard that Fenny, 51, entered her residence shouting and screaming, then proceeded to rip off her clothing and sexually assault her.
The police responded swiftly, arriving at her home while Fenny still remained inside, sitting calmly, which astonished investigators.
The woman was left visibly distressed—her throat red and marked by a bite on her arm—after fighting to defend herself.
When asked about the incident, Fenny unexpectedly dismissed the situation, saying, "Don't worry.
It'll be nfa'd (no further action)." Due to the victim's silence, no formal charges were initially pursued, but Fenny’s malicious behavior persisted beyond that point.
He continued to harass her through relentless, abusive text messages and obsessive Facebook stalking.
Over just ten days, investigators discovered that he conducted 485 searches attempting to uncover information about her and her associates.
Despite initial police warnings, Fenny’s harassment escalated, leading to further violent incidents.
One particularly terrifying event occurred in a pub, where Fenny, under the influence of alcohol and displaying aggressive verbal hostility, attacked her again.
She awoke to find him physically strangling her as she was slipping in and out of consciousness.
She managed to regain awareness only to find his belt around her neck, with him threatening that she would die.
Showing remarkable resilience, she fought her way free and called emergency services.
Strangely, Fenny — even after this violent attack — remained composed and waited for police to arrive, while she was left feeling hysterical and terrified.
Fenny, who hails from Dovecot Street in central Stockton, pleaded guilty to multiple charges: sexual assault, assault causing actual bodily harm, aggravated burglary, stalking, and making threats to kill.
It was also revealed that he had a previous conviction for harassment.
The court heard how his pattern of violent and obsessive behavior marked him as a dangerous individual.
Judge Sean Morris sentenced Fenny to an extended prison term of 20 years, recognizing his dangerousness.
The sentence includes a prison term of 16 years plus an additional four years on extended license.
Fenny was also issued a restraining order and will be required to register as a sex offender indefinitely.
Detective Constable Shaun Watson, the lead investigator on the case, expressed satisfaction with the sentence.
He praised the victim’s bravery in coming forward despite enduring such a horrendous ordeal, stating, "I am pleased with the sentence handed to Brian Fenny which reflects the severity of the crimes that he has committed.
The victim has shown great courage by coming forward to police, and throughout the complex investigation and trial, she has maintained her strength.
