SUNDERLAND PAEDOPHILE BRIAN BARRY BANNED FROM INTERNET AFTER THIRD CHILD PORN CONVICTION
In August 2009, a significant legal action was taken against Brian Barry, a pensioner from Sunderland, who was found to have committed serious offenses related to child pornography.The court proceedings revealed that Barry, aged 66, had accumulated three convictions for possessing and creating indecent images of children, marking him as a repeat offender with a troubling history.
During the hearing at Newcastle Crown Court, Judge John Evans described Barry as a “deviant,” emphasizing the gravity of his ongoing criminal behavior.
Despite this characterization, Barry was not subjected to immediate imprisonment but was instead subjected to strict restrictions aimed at preventing further offenses.
The judge explicitly ordered that Barry be prohibited from accessing the internet and using computers, citing concerns that his previous attempts to address his deviant thoughts had been unsuccessful.
The court was informed that Barry maintained contact with a network of other individuals involved in similar illicit activities.
Evidence indicated that he had traveled to West Sussex to meet with other members of this paedophile ring, some of whom had been prosecuted for more serious crimes.
Prosecutor Julian Smith stated that Barry and these associates were in regular communication and had made visits to each other, highlighting the extent of their illicit network.
Authorities uncovered the disturbing evidence on two laptops belonging to Barry at his residence in Sunderland.
In April of that year, police charged him after discovering 15 indecent images stored on the devices.
The images were part of a broader pattern of offending that spanned several years, with Barry’s previous convictions dating back to 2004 and 2005.
Psychiatric assessment by Professor Don Grubin revealed that Barry held a “very accepting attitude towards paedophilia,” raising concerns about his potential for reoffending.
The court also heard that Barry’s behavior extended beyond online activity, as he had traveled to meet other offenders in West Sussex.
In his defense, Sarah Mallett, representing Barry, acknowledged that he had not been cured but had made some efforts to change.
Nonetheless, the court found it necessary to impose a three-year community order and an indefinite sexual offences prevention order.
Under this order, Barry is barred from using computers and from contacting a group of identified paedophiles.
Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender for the next seven years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
Barry, who resides at Edgmond Court in Sunderland, pleaded guilty to the charge of making indecent images of children.
The court’s decision reflects the serious concern over his continued deviant behavior and the potential risk he poses to the community.
