BRETT SAUNDERS FROM SWINDON ADMITS GUILT IN CHILD SEX ABUSE ONLINE RING
A man from Swindon has admitted to serious charges related to his involvement in a dark web operation centered around the sharing and distribution of child sexual abuse content.Brett Saunders, aged 50, became a key figure in an investigation led by the National Crime Agency (NCA) after authorities uncovered his role in a clandestine online community.
The investigation focused on a highly secretive website accessible only through the Tor network, which boasted over 2,000 members.
The site was notorious for its illegal content and strict hierarchy, with Saunders identified as a prominent moderator known by the username 'Wetty.' As a Global Moderator, Saunders was responsible for enforcing the site's rules, managing user interactions, and providing advice on how to avoid detection by law enforcement agencies.
The NCA's efforts led to Saunders being pinpointed as the individual behind the 'Wetty' account.
Further inquiries revealed that he had prior convictions related to the sexual exploitation of children, raising serious concerns about his ongoing involvement in such criminal activities.
In August 2022, authorities executed a search at Saunders' residence in the Freshbrook area of Swindon.
During the raid, officers seized multiple electronic devices, including a laptop hidden beneath a sofa cushion, a mobile phone, and a hard drive concealed within an air vent.
The laptop was found to be open and logged into his account on the illegal website.
When questioned by officers, Saunders confirmed his role as a Global Moderator and admitted to uploading indecent images of children to the site.
He also disclosed a sexual interest in children, specifically girls aged between 8 and 12 years old.
Investigators recovered extensive data from his devices, including over 3,000 posts and private messages exchanged with other users, which demonstrated his significant contribution to the site's operation.
Evidence indicated that Saunders had rapidly advanced through the site's ranks, motivated by his active participation and encouragement of others to share and discuss child abuse material.
His promotion to Global Moderator was met with a message from another user, to which Saunders responded: “Thank you… I must say it came as a bit of a shock to me!
Not sure what I did to deserve the honor, but whatever it was I will try to keep doing it to the best of my abilities!” The website operated on a points-based system, where users earned 'reputation points' for following rules and sharing illegal content.
New users had to accumulate at least 10 reputation points to gain access to the main site, with Saunders overseeing the initial guest portal, issuing or deducting points, and deciding who could advance.
Throughout his online activity, Saunders uploaded a total of 115 images and videos depicting child abuse.
Among these were two disturbing images of a young girl, posted during a discussion about the legalization of pre-teen marriage, accompanied by a caption expressing a disturbing desire for the girl to remain at that age forever.
Additionally, authorities recovered over 65,000 files related to indecent images of children from his devices.
Following his arrest, Saunders faced further legal action.
Wiltshire Police charged him with breaching a sexual harm prevention order previously imposed when he was released from prison for earlier offenses.
He was remanded in custody and later sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for this breach.
Last year, Saunders faced additional charges, including nine counts of serious criminal conduct such as arranging or facilitating the sexual exploitation of a child under 13, participating in organized crime, distributing and creating indecent images in categories A-C, and possessing a prohibited image of a child.
On Friday, 19 January, at Swindon Magistrates Court, he pleaded guilty to all nine counts.
His sentencing is scheduled for 5 March 2024 at Swindon Crown Court, where he faces a lengthy prison term for his crimes.
