MAN TURNED UP AT A NEWCASTLE HOTEL HOPING TO MEET A 14-YEAR-OLD BOY HE HAD BEEN GROOMING ONLINE BUT WAS INSTEAD GREETED BY POLICE
A local man from Suffolk, Brett Lambert, was apprehended after attempting to meet what he believed was a 14-year-old boy online, only to find himself confronting law enforcement instead.Lambert, described during the court proceedings as a 'risk-taking sexual thrill seeker,' had expressed concerns that the online profile he was communicating with might be a setup by police or vigilantes aimed at catching predators.
Despite his suspicions, Lambert decided to proceed with the planned meeting in Newcastle, which ultimately led to his arrest.
The incident came to light in May of the previous year, during which Lambert, an oil rig worker at the time, was traveling home from Aberdeen.
On a train, he accessed the Fab Guys website and began chatting with a profile that claimed to be an 18-year-old but indicated the person was actually 14.
Lambert was told that the individual was in class and was shown an image of a young boy in school uniform holding a piece of paper.
During the exchange, Lambert refused to send any personal photographs of himself.
Instead, he inquired if the boy knew any females interested in a threesome.
Throughout the conversation, Lambert expressed doubts about the authenticity of the profile, questioning if it was a setup by a 'nonce hunter.' When informed that the meeting could be cancelled, Lambert insisted he was still interested and merely nervous.
He also asked the boy to bring a condom, indicating sexual intentions.
Planning to meet the supposed minor, Lambert checked into the Easy Hotel in Newcastle city centre, carrying his belongings to his room before heading down to the lobby to meet the individual he believed was a 14-year-old boy.
However, as soon as he arrived, police officers were waiting and promptly arrested him.
During police interviews, Lambert claimed he had a unique 'fetish' involving arranging meetings with people without acting on them just watching rather than engaging in sexual activity.
He suggested he had suspected the other party might be part of a vigilante group or police operation and insisted he had no intention of following through with any illegal acts.
Brett Lambert, aged 29 and without any previous convictions, pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.
The court sentenced him to 15 months in prison, suspended for two years.
He was also ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work, attend rehabilitative programs, and was mandated to register as a sex offender.
Additionally, Lambert will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for a decade, reinforcing ongoing restrictions concerning his conduct.
