BEVERLY ALLITT: THE LINCOLNSHIRE ANGEL OF DEATH SENTENCED TO 30 YEARS IN PRISON

Beverly Allitt, infamously known as the 'Angel of Death,' has been sentenced to serve a minimum of 30 years behind bars for her heinous crimes committed in Lincolnshire.

The high court's decision, announced in December 2007, confirms that Allitt, who was convicted in 1993 of multiple murders and attempted murders, must remain incarcerated for at least three decades before she becomes eligible for parole.

Allitt, a former nurse at Grantham and Kesteven Hospital in Lincolnshire, was initially sentenced to 13 life terms after a series of devastating attacks between 1991 and 1993.

Her crimes involved the injection of high doses of insulin into vulnerable children under her care, leading to the deaths of four young victims and the injury of nine others.

The children she murdered include seven-week-old Liam Taylor, 11-year-old Timothy Hardwick, two-month-old Becky Phillips, and 15-month-old Claire Peck.

All these tragic deaths occurred within a span of just a few months, leaving the community devastated.

In her sentencing, the judge, Mr.

Justice Stanley Burnton, emphasized the severity of her actions and the profound impact on the families involved.

The court took into account the time Allitt had already spent in custody—approximately one year and 190 days—before her sentencing, which contributed to the calculation of her minimum term.

The judge reaffirmed the 30-year minimum, aligning with previous recommendations from the trial judge and the then Lord Chief Justice.

It was noted that Allitt would be 54 years old before she could be considered for parole.

During her trial, it was established that Allitt was suffering from Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSbP), a mental health disorder characterized by a caregiver deliberately inducing or fabricating illnesses in children to attract attention and sympathy.

This diagnosis was made after a thorough psychiatric evaluation, and it was a key factor in understanding her motives and mental state during the attacks.

The attacks, which took place over a two-year period, involved her administering lethal doses of insulin to her young victims, a method that resulted in their deaths and caused significant trauma to their families.

At the time of her crimes, Allitt was the only nurse on duty during the incidents, which further underscored the premeditated and calculated nature of her actions.

The court heard that her conduct was not only criminal but also marked by a disturbing element of sadism, which the judge acknowledged was likely a manifestation of her mental disorder.

The judge remarked that her actions transformed what should have been a safe environment into a place of danger and death, describing the hospital as almost becoming a killing field.

Relatives of the victims expressed their relief and satisfaction with the court's verdict.

Joanne Taylor, mother of Liam Taylor, stated her approval of the judge's recognition of Allitt's sadism, saying, “That’s what we all felt at the time.

There’s a fine line between evil and illness, and I’ll never forget him saying that word today.” Similarly, David Peck, father of Claire Peck, expressed his happiness with the outcome, stating, “I’m absolutely delighted with the result—and pleased for the other families as well.

We can now try to move on after 15 years.

I couldn’t ask for anything better.” Allitt’s crimes shocked the nation and cast a long shadow over the medical community in Lincolnshire.

Her case remains one of the most disturbing instances of child abuse and medical murder in recent history, highlighting the importance of mental health assessments and vigilant oversight in healthcare settings.

The court’s decision aims to ensure that she remains incarcerated for a significant period, reflecting the gravity of her offenses and the irreversible harm caused to her young victims and their families.
