SCARBOROUGH PAEDOPHILE BENJAMIN WATKINSON CAUGHT IN ONLINE PREDATION SCHEME
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online predators, Benjamin Watkinson, a 33-year-old resident of Scarborough, was sentenced to prison after being caught engaging in illicit communications with what he believed were underage girls. The incident unfolded in March 2021, when vigilant paedo hunters, operating undercover online profiles, successfully identified and exposed his predatory behavior.
Watkinson initiated contact with what he thought were teenage girls on social media platforms Facebook and WhatsApp.
He expressed a desire to be their boyfriend and, alarmingly, asked at least one of these fictitious minors to engage in sexual activity with him.
Unbeknownst to him, the profiles he was communicating with were created by adult vigilante groups aiming to catch predators.
These groups had set up fake profiles, including one of a 13-year-old girl and another of a 14-year-old girl, to lure in potential offenders.
According to the court proceedings at York Crown Court, Watkinson's online exchanges were deeply troubling.
He sent explicit photographs of his private parts to two of these fake profiles, which he believed belonged to underage girls aged 13 and 14.
The decoys involved in the sting provided evidence of these exchanges, which revealed his disturbing intentions.
The police were alerted to Watkinson’s activities after a member of a vigilante group, acting as a decoy, uploaded a profile of a fictitious girl onto the internet.
This decoy then received a friend request from Watkinson via Facebook Messenger.
Following this, the decoy shared her mobile number, and their conversations continued on WhatsApp.
The decoy, claiming to be a deaf 13-year-old girl, engaged in ongoing communication with Watkinson, who persistently asked her about her appearance and preferences.
During these exchanges, Watkinson inquired if she would be his “secret girlfriend” and suggested the possibility of having sex.
He also sent her 12 explicit images of his genitals and asked her to show him an intimate part of her body.
The situation escalated when another vigilante group provided additional evidence, revealing that Watkinson had contacted a profile of a supposed 14-year-old girl, complimenting her and requesting photographs.
When she disclosed her real age, Watkinson responded with a disturbing statement, saying, “Truly, to be honest, I fancy you,” and expressed a desire to have children with her, acknowledging that such a relationship would lead to him going to prison.
Further evidence showed that Watkinson had sent a total of 11 explicit images of his private parts to the fictitious 14-year-old girl.
His online activities also included browsing the internet with search terms such as ‘young girls having sex’ and ‘rape scene with kids,’ although police found no indecent material on his devices during a subsequent search.
He was arrested in April of the previous year and released on bail under strict conditions, including the prohibition of possessing new internet-enabled devices.
Despite these restrictions, police discovered that Watkinson had continued to browse the web, indicating ongoing interest in illegal content.
His actions came to light during a police investigation, which culminated in his appearance before the court.
Watkinson admitted to three counts of attempting to communicate sexually with a child, with the offenses spanning from March to April 2020.
Judge Simon Hickey delivered the sentence, condemning Watkinson for deliberately manipulating conversations from innocent chat to explicit sexual discussions.
He described Watkinson as an isolated individual who was fully aware of his actions and intentions.
The judge sentenced him to eight months in prison, emphasizing the seriousness of his predatory behavior.
Additionally, Watkinson was placed on the sex offenders’ register for ten years and subjected to a sexual-harm prevention order for a similar period, aimed at restricting his internet activities and preventing further offenses.
