BENJAMIN ROBERTS FROM SWANSEA CAUGHT IN PAEDOPHILE HUNTING STING
In a disturbing case that unfolded in Swansea, a man named Benjamin Roberts was caught engaging in online conversations with what he believed were underage girls, revealing a troubling attraction to young children.The incident came to light after Roberts, 30 years old, initiated contact with what he thought were two young girls on Facebook, only to be confronted by a group of online paedophile hunters who had set up the accounts to catch offenders.
According to court proceedings, Roberts engaged with two Facebook profiles, claiming to be girls aged 11 and 13, named Elle and Paisley.
Over a period of several weeks, he exchanged messages with these accounts, which were actually operated by an adult woman involved in a vigilant group dedicated to exposing online child exploitation.
The court heard that Roberts expressed a desire to kiss and cuddle the girls, and at one point, he sent a graphic image of his genitals to one of the decoy accounts.
Robin Rouch, the prosecutor, detailed how the communication with the first account, claiming to be an 11-year-old girl, was relatively brief.
During this interaction, Roberts repeatedly complimented her, calling her beautiful and sexy, and expressed his wish to kiss and cuddle her.
The contact with the second account, which claimed to be a 13-year-old girl, lasted significantly longer.
As the conversations progressed, Roberts' messages became increasingly explicit.
He discussed the girl’s body, expressed a desire to give her hugs and kisses, and asked her to send pictures of her breasts.
The defendant then sent an explicit photograph of himself to the decoy.
Further disturbing details emerged when Roberts told the girl he was in the bath pleasuring himself, indicating a clear intent to engage in sexual activity.
The group of online vigilantes, aware of Roberts’ intentions, decided to confront him physically.
On June 7, members of the group traveled to his residence in Swansea to apprehend him.
When they arrived, Roberts was not at home, but other members of his family were present and promptly called the police.
Roberts, who was formerly residing on Robert Street in Manselton, Swansea, but is now of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted sexual communication with a child.
His sentencing included a 24-week prison term, and he was also subjected to a sexual harm prevention order that will last for the next seven years.
Additionally, Roberts is required to register as a sex offender for the same period, marking a serious legal consequence for his actions.
