BENJAMIN POOLY AND SHOCKING CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGES IN LONDON AND OXFORDSHIRE
A man identified as Benjamin Pooley, who previously worked as a teaching assistant, has been arrested and charged following disturbing revelations about his involvement in child exploitation imagery. The case came to light after authorities in the United States linked a Kik messaging account registered in his name to the possession and sharing of explicit images depicting children.
The initial alert was from the non-profit organization the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which contacted UK law enforcement regarding a user on Kik suspected of disseminating child abuse images in August 2019.
Investigations traced the Kik account to an IP address associated with Pooley’s former residence in Witney, Oxfordshire.
The account was registered with his email address and phone number, tying him directly to the material.
On March 4 of the previous year, police officers from Oxford Crown Court executed a warrant at the address believed to be Pooley’s home.
However, by that date, he had already moved out approximately four weeks earlier.
Subsequently, officers tracked him to his place of employment, a school situated in Witney, where he was apprehended.
Prosecutor James Gwatkin confirmed that Pooley was working at the school at the time.
Pooley, aged 28, became publicly known in 2019 when he appeared on the popular quiz show Countdown.
Despite his appearance on the show, new revelations revealed he had denied any association with the Kik account or possessing illegal images during police interviews.
However, this denial was proven false after police examined two devices seized from him—an iPhone found while he was at work and a computer taken from his home in Stanton Harcourt.
The forensic analysis uncovered a disturbing collection of images on these devices.
Police confirmed that Pooley had stored 22 images classified as Category A, the most severe classification that includes depictions of child rape.
Additionally, there were two images in Category B, 38 in Category C, and 15 prohibited images of children.
The images depicted pre-pubescent children, highlighting the grievous nature of the material involved.
Furthermore, investigators found evidence suggesting that in 2020 and 2021, Pooley conducted Google searches for extreme 'pornography,' indicating ongoing interest during that period.
During legal proceedings, Judge Michael Gledhill QC sentenced Pooley to eight months in prison, suspended for two years.
In his remarks, the judge condemned the defendant’s actions, stating, "The children in those images that you were looking at for your own sexual gratification were being abused by others and, but for the likes of you paying for those images, they would be unlikely to be abused.
So, you are directly responsible, albeit in part, for the sexual abuse of pre-pubescent children, to say nothing of the older ones.
You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself." The judge also expressed his incredulity over how Pooley could derive any pleasure from such depravity.
Supporters of the defendant have pointed out that Pooley has no previous convictions, currently works in a laboratory to support his wife and baby, and has undergone therapy to address his behavior.
His legal representative, Dana Bilan, conveyed that Pooley expressed remorse during his probation interview and continues to do so.
In addition to the suspended jail sentence, Pooley was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid community service, attend up to 40 rehabilitative sessions with the probation service, and pay costs amounting to 425 pounds.
Furthermore, he was placed under a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and will be required to register as a sex offender for the next decade.
As a final admonition, Judge Gledhill warned Pooley, "Don’t ever come before this court again," emphasizing the seriousness of his actions and the need to prevent such offenses in the future.
