Biggin Hill Godalming Child Sexual Abuser
In a case that has spanned decades, Benjamin Graham Dix, a man with ties to both Biggin Hill and Godalming, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison after admitting to multiple counts of indecent assault against young boys. The court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse that began in the late 1960s and continued into the early 1990s, involving two victims who were children at the time of the assaults.
The first victim, who came forward in September 2011, recounted that the abuse occurred during the summer of either 1969 or 1970, when he was just nine or ten years old. At that time, Dix, who was a member of a flying club based at Biggin Hill Airport, would take him for rides in his car. During these outings, Dix would allow the boy to steer the vehicle, only to subject him to indecent assaults while doing so. The victim described feeling confused and frightened, unable to comprehend the betrayal by someone he trusted.
The second victim was assaulted in 1992, also while in Dix’s car, and on several occasions when Dix visited the victim’s family home. These assaults, which spanned over two decades, were part of a pattern of predatory behavior that exploited the vulnerability of young children. The details of these crimes only came to light after the victims found the courage to speak out many years later.
Following the initial report, detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Sapphire unit launched a thorough investigation. On November 9, 2011, Dix was arrested at his residence in Godalming, Surrey. The police action was the culmination of years of effort to bring justice for the victims. Subsequently, Dix was formally charged on April 18, 2012, and appeared before Woolwich Crown Court to face the charges.
On December 20, 2013, the court sentenced Dix to 30 months in prison. As part of his sentence, he will also be required to sign the sex offenders’ register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
Detective Constable Paul Hill, who was involved in the case from the Sapphire unit, emphasized the bravery of the victims. “The two victims in this case were children when Dix assaulted them. They showed courage to come forward after so many years to tell us what happened to them. These were very disturbing assaults on very young children at the time, and although these assaults took place many years ago, it shows we will pursue sex offenders and bring them to justice,” he stated.
Detective Chief Inspector Pete Thomas also commented on the case, highlighting the importance of victim support and the significance of justice. “Dix sexually abused two young boys who were vulnerable. This case may have happened many years ago, but in this case, he was brought to justice because his victims came forward. They should be commended for overcoming their fears and disclosing these terrible crimes. With appropriate support from police and our partners, I urge other victims of sexual crimes to come forward and tell us what has happened to them. You will be supported.”
