BENJAMIN-CORNEL TEGLAS AND SHOCKING INTRUSION IN EDINBURGH'S JOHN LEWIS

A man identified as Benjamin-Cornel Teglas has been convicted and placed on the Sex Offenders Register following a disturbing incident at a prominent department store in Edinburgh.

The incident involved the 20-year-old offender secretly spying on a young woman in the women’s toilets of the John Lewis store located in Edinburgh’s St James Quarter.

According to reports, Teglas concealed himself inside a cubicle within the women’s restroom and peered underneath the partition to observe a 22-year-old woman who had entered the adjacent stall.

The victim was reportedly taken aback by the invasion of her privacy, describing her reaction as being “frozen and alarmed.” After realizing she was being watched, she shouted at the individual and quickly exited the toilet area, alerting store staff to the incident.

Following the event on May 27 this year, police officers reviewed CCTV footage from the store in an effort to identify the perpetrator.

The footage revealed Teglas loitering near the toilets for approximately 18 minutes before the incident occurred.

He was eventually apprehended by law enforcement officers who recognized him from the footage.

Teglas appeared before Edinburgh Sheriff Court last month, where he pleaded guilty to the charge of observing the woman during a private act by peering under the cubicle at John Lewis.

The court proceedings were conducted with the assistance of a Romanian interpreter.

He was brought back to court for sentencing on the following Thursday.

During the hearing, defense lawyer Mary Moultrie emphasized that her client was a first-time offender and expressed that Teglas fully accepted responsibility for his actions.

She also noted that he was employed full-time selling the Big Issue and, despite having an unresolved matter in Romania, plans to return to Scotland to reside.

Sheriff Peter McCormack addressed the court, stating, “You pleaded guilty a trial diet to a serious sexual offence whereby you entered the ladies toilets at John Lewis in Edinburgh on May 27.

CCTV showed you were loitering for around 18 minutes and in the course of that period you looked under a partition greatly to the alarm of a young woman there.

The offence meets the custody threshold but I note your age and you have no previous convictions.” The sheriff sentenced Teglas to an alternative to imprisonment, ordering him to complete 135 hours of unpaid community work.

Additionally, he was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for a period of five years.

The court was also informed by fiscal depute India McLean that the victim and her sister had been shopping in the John Lewis store when they decided to use the toilets around 2:20 pm on May 27.

Ms.

McLean explained that Teglas had been observed earlier loitering in the area, seemingly checking to see if anyone was present before entering the female restroom.

The court heard that the victim unknowingly entered the cubicle next to Teglas and locked the door behind her.

She then noticed Teglas with his head under her cubicle, which caused her to feel “frozen and alarmed.” She shouted at him, asking, “what do you think you are doing?” and he maintained eye contact with her for a few seconds before withdrawing his head back into his own cubicle.

The woman then fled the toilet area, and Teglas was later seen peering out from his cubicle before leaving the scene.

This case highlights the serious nature of privacy violations and the importance of safeguarding personal boundaries in public spaces.

The incident at John Lewis in Edinburgh has drawn attention to the need for vigilance and appropriate legal action in cases of voyeurism and invasive behavior.
