BEN IGBINEDION'S BRUTAL CRIME IN BROMLEY AND DOWNHAM LEAVES NEPHEW DEAD
In a tragic and shocking incident that unfolded in the southeast London areas of Bromley and Downham, a man named Ben Igbinedion was convicted of the murder of his three-year-old nephew, Daniel Evbuomwan. The young boy lost his life in March after suffering catastrophic injuries that included severe damage to his ribs and pelvis, injuries so severe that they were likened by medical experts to those sustained in high-impact traffic accidents or being trampled by horses.According to court proceedings, Igbinedion, aged 44 and residing in Bromley and Downham, was responsible for the brutal assault while he was caring for Daniel at his home. The court heard that during the attack, Igbinedion, in a fit of rage, stamped on the boy at least twice, inflicting internal bleeding, a shattered pelvis, and fractured ribs. Instead of seeking immediate medical help, Igbinedion chose to put Daniel back to bed and then left the house to go shopping, attempting to distance himself from the scene of the violence.
The young boy was eventually taken to hospital on March 2 after he was found unresponsive and unable to be awakened. Sadly, he was pronounced dead later that day. The post-mortem examination, conducted by Professor Anthony Risdon, revealed injuries that were described as among the most severe he had encountered, with the injuries being consistent with crushing forces.
During the trial at the Old Bailey, prosecutor Richard Whittam QC emphasized the severity of Daniel’s injuries, suggesting they could have resulted from crushing forces similar to those experienced in serious traffic accidents. Igbinedion, who denied the charge of murder, claimed to have treated Daniel as if he were his own son but was unable to provide a clear explanation for the injuries sustained by the boy.
Relatives of the young victim, including his mother Augustina, were present during the court proceedings. She broke down in tears as the guilty verdicts were read. In a heartfelt statement released by police, she expressed her grief, saying, “I am unable to sleep and, when I am able, I wake up in tears because I can no longer see Daniel lying by my side. I cannot get over his death because of the bond we had. He would look into my eyes and say ‘Mummy, how are you?’”
It was revealed that Daniel had been sent from Nigeria by his mother, Augustina, and his father, Victor, a doctor, to stay with his grandmother in London. On the night of the tragedy, the grandmother had taken Daniel to stay over at Igbinedion’s home in Bromley because she wanted to attend church. His mother, Sandra, was working a night shift as a nurse at the time. When she returned home, she found Daniel still in bed, unresponsive, and despite efforts to wake him, he was not breathing. An ambulance was called, but tragically, Daniel could not be saved.
During the investigation, Igbinedion attempted to shift blame onto his wife, claiming she was responsible for the boy’s death. However, his version of events was dismissed by the jury. Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Gwyn commented on the case, stating, “His violent actions resulted in the death of a boy who had no chance of defending himself.”
Ben Igbinedion, who was convicted of murder at the Old Bailey, is scheduled to be sentenced later this month. The case has shocked the local communities of Bromley and Downham, highlighting the devastating consequences of unchecked violence within a family setting.
