Dalbeattie Rapist
In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Dalbeattie and the wider region, Barry Mulholland, aged 47, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed over a span of more than two decades. The High Court in Edinburgh heard how Mulholland subjected five young women to a campaign of sexual abuse, with four of his victims being under the age of 16 at the time of their assaults, including a particularly disturbing incident involving an 11-year-old girl.

During the sentencing, Lord Richardson emphasized the profound and lasting impact Mulholland's actions have had on his victims. The judge stated, “It is clear that your actions have had a profound and long-standing impact on some of these young women,” highlighting the severity of the crimes and their devastating effects.

Mulholland was found guilty of six charges related to the rapes of five young women, following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow. The court was told that his crimes constituted a deliberate and sustained campaign of abuse. Despite the guilty verdicts, Mulholland continued to deny any responsibility for his actions and showed no remorse during the proceedings.

At the sentencing hearing, Lord Richardson condemned Mulholland’s conduct, describing it as “appalling” and stating that a lengthy custodial sentence was the only appropriate response. The judge also ordered that Mulholland, who resides on Urr Road in Dalbeattie, be placed under supervision for an additional three years after his release. He warned that any breach of license conditions during this period could result in his return to prison.

The court was informed that Mulholland poses a high risk of reoffending, based on assessments conducted prior to sentencing. The judge made it clear that the safety of the community and the victims was paramount in his decision.

Details of the crimes revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse. Mulholland’s first known victim was assaulted between August 1994 and August 1997, when she was aged 14 or 15, at a residence in West Lothian. He later raped another girl while she was under the influence of alcohol in Moffat, between November 1997 and November 1998. A third victim, aged 15, was also subjected to rape, though specific details of that incident were not elaborated upon.

The youngest victim, an 11-year-old girl, was attacked in a vehicle at an unspecified location in the region between December 2015 and December 2016. Mulholland carried out a sexual act on himself and sexually assaulted the young girl inside the vehicle. His only adult victim was a woman who was raped in Dumfries in 2017.

Following his conviction, Mulholland was placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities. The case has left a lasting scar on the community of Dalbeattie and serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and justice in protecting vulnerable individuals from predatory offenders.
