BARRY JONES FROM SOUTHEND ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE VIEWING CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN SHOCKING CASE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Southend, Barry Jones, a 47-year-old resident of Barnaby Road, was found to have an extensive collection of illegal child abuse images and videos.Despite the severity of his actions, Jones was spared immediate imprisonment after a court hearing at Basildon Crown Court in December 2017.
Police officers executed a search of Jones's home and uncovered a staggering stash of more than 30,000 illicit photographs and videos depicting the abuse of young children, some as young as two years old.
During questioning, Jones admitted to viewing these images regularly, describing it as a “regular pastime” and claiming he was “addicted” to the online material.
He explained that viewing these images had become a secret habit, which he kept hidden from others because of the shame associated with his actions.
Prosecutor Christopher Paxton detailed the disturbing nature of the collection, emphasizing its size and the variety of victims depicted.
The images included over 4,000 still photographs and 200 videos classified as Category A, indicating the most serious level of abuse.
Additionally, there were more than 7,000 still images and 80 videos in Category B, along with over 20,000 still images and 50 videos categorized as Category C.
The collection featured a broad spectrum of victims, ranging from infants to older children, captured in various poses and subjected to different acts of abuse.
During the police interview, Jones further revealed that he had a sexual interest in both boys and girls, and he described his viewing habits as a “dirty secret,” especially considering he was employed at the time.
In addition to his illegal activities, Jones also admitted to possessing ammunition for a firearm without a license, specifically two bullets intended for display purposes, which added to the seriousness of his case.
Judge John Lodge acknowledged the long period over which Jones had been downloading and viewing this “filth,” but he ultimately decided against sending Jones to prison.
The judge explained that a custodial sentence would prevent Jones from participating in a recommended internet sex offender treatment programme, which could aid in his rehabilitation.
Neither a prison sentence nor a suspended sentence was deemed appropriate in this case.
Instead, Jones was sentenced to a 36-month community order.
As part of this order, he is required to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and participate in the sex offender treatment programme.
Furthermore, he must sign the sex offenders register for 15 years and pay costs amounting to £500.
The court’s decision reflects a focus on rehabilitation while acknowledging the gravity of his offences, which have deeply disturbed the community of Southend.
