Newcastle Rapist
A paedophile who finally admitted to the rape of a child two days into his trial has been sentenced to over 13 years in prison. The victim’s family alerted Northumbria Police in 2021 about her being raped years earlier by Barry Brennan. A detailed investigation was launched, leading to Brennan's swift arrest, during which he denied all allegations. Initially charged with three counts of child rape, Brennan denied all charges and went to trial at Newcastle Crown Court in November last year. However, on the second day, he changed his plea to admit two counts of rape, with the third count being left on file. Brennan, 39, from Shields Road, in the Byker area of Newcastle, was sentenced last Friday to 13.5 years in prison. The court also issued a restraining order related to the victim and an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, while Brennan will remain on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life. Detective Constable Lisa Herron, who led the investigation, praised the victim’s bravery and emphasized the importance of reporting abuse regardless of how much time has passed, urging other victims to come forward. Brennan's case highlights the ongoing threat posed by such offenders and the importance of justice for victims.
