BARRIE LEWIS SHOCKS EDINBURGH WITH HORRIFIC SEX OFFENCES AGAINST CHILDREN
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the Edinburgh community, Barrie Lewis, a 39-year-old man from Greendykes Road, was convicted of heinous sexual offences involving two young girls.The crimes, which spanned several years, included the rape of a 12-year-old girl and the abuse of a second girl who was only five years old at the time.
Lewis's criminal activities came to light after a series of disturbing revelations.
The first victim, a girl aged 12, was assaulted between March 2007 and April 2008.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Lewis had given her £10 and instructed her not to disclose the abuse to her parents.
He pleaded guilty to charges of rape and other sexual offences, including forcing her to perform a sex act.
The court was informed that Lewis's actions were part of a pattern of predatory behaviour.
Further details emerged regarding the second victim, who was just five years old when the abuse began.
Lewis admitted to engaging in indecent behaviour with her, which included kissing, touching, and making her perform a sex act.
The court also learned that Lewis had a collection of indecent images stored on his computer, highlighting the extent of his misconduct.
Legal representatives presented evidence that Lewis's abuse of the second girl started when she was only nine years old.
The victim later confided in a school friend, who was instructed to keep the secret.
It was only two years later that the friend disclosed the abuse to her mother, prompting the family to report the matter to authorities.
This chain of events ultimately led to Lewis's arrest and subsequent conviction.
Judge Lord Kinclaven sentenced Lewis to a total of 12 years in prison.
Additionally, upon his release, Lewis will remain on licence for three years, under strict supervision.
His name has also been formally added to the sex offenders' register, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
The court's decision underscored the severity of Lewis's breach of trust and the profound harm inflicted upon his young victims.
Advocate depute Graeme Jessop emphasized the gravity of the case, stating that the abuse of a child, especially over such an extended period, constitutes a gross breach of trust.
