Matlock Rapist
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Matlock and the wider Derbyshire area, Barrie Green, a 78-year-old man with a long history of sex offenses, has been sentenced to a 12-year prison term for heinous crimes involving two young girls. The court proceedings revealed the disturbing details of Green's predatory behavior, which has left lasting scars on his victims and their families.

Green's first victim, now 18 years old, was just 10 years old when she was subjected to two separate acts of sexual assault by him. These assaults took place in Derbyshire, with one incident occurring in a bathroom eight years prior to the court hearing. The young girl has since been receiving extensive counseling since 2011 to cope with the trauma inflicted upon her. The court heard that after the first assault, Green behaved as if nothing had happened and warned her not to tell anyone, further complicating her emotional recovery.

The second victim, also 10 years old at the time, was assaulted in her sleep at a house in Derbyshire in August of the previous year. She awoke to find Green forcing her into sexual activity. The prosecution explained that her disclosure to her parents was the first indication of Green’s continued predatory behavior, leading to his arrest and subsequent prosecution. Her family has described the devastating impact this has had on her and the entire family unit.

Jim Thomas, the prosecutor, emphasized the gravity of Green’s actions, stating that he had a history of sexual offenses dating back to the 1960s, including convictions for indecent exposure, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and gross indecency with a child. The court was told that Green’s pattern of offending was longstanding and deeply troubling.

During the hearing, Green pleaded guilty to two counts of raping a child under 13 in relation to his first victim. He also admitted to two counts of causing or inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity, related to the second victim. The judge, Jonathan Bennett, condemned Green’s abuse of trust, describing his crimes as among the most heinous and noting the profound devastation caused to the victims and their families.

Green, who resides on Springfield Rise in Matlock, expressed remorse through a letter read in court, though the court acknowledged that such sentiments may hold little comfort for the victims. His defense argued that his guilty pleas and expressions of remorse should be considered as mitigating factors.

In addition to the prison sentence, Judge Bennett imposed a sexual harm prevention order on Green. This order prohibits him from having any unsupervised contact with individuals under the age of 16 upon his release, aiming to prevent any further harm and protect vulnerable children in the community of Derbyshire.
