In a disturbing case that highlights the ongoing efforts to combat online child exploitation, Balachandran Kavungal, a business manager employed by Citibank in Canary Wharf, was apprehended after attempting to meet a minor for sexual activity. The incident unfolded when Kavungal traveled from London to Birmingham on September 10th, with the intent of meeting a 14-year-old girl he had groomed online.
He had booked a hotel room in Birmingham, where he planned to wait for the girl’s arrival.
However, his plans were thwarted when members of the Internet Interceptors, a well-known and reputable paedophile hunting group, intercepted his communication.
These online child protection specialists had set up a decoy to catch predators like Kavungal, and they successfully exposed his intentions.
Upon his arrival at the hotel, Kavungal was greeted by the Internet Interceptors, who explained that he had been caught in their sting operation.
A search of his belongings revealed a perfume gift, Viagra, and condoms—items that underscored his intent to engage in sexual activity with a minor.
The authorities also found that he had brought these items specifically for the purpose of meeting the child.

The court heard the details of his actions, which included traveling from London to Birmingham with the explicit goal of engaging in sexual acts with a minor.
The judge sentenced Kavungal to 15 months in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years and was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order that will remain in effect for a decade.
The court also announced that once his sentence is completed, Kavungal will be deported back to his home country.
The judge praised the Internet Interceptors, describing them as a group of good character who are well known for their dedicated efforts in paedophile hunting.
Their work was instrumental in preventing a potential sexual assault and bringing Kavungal to justice, highlighting the importance of vigilant online child protection initiatives.
