AUSTIN TAYLOR AND SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN SOMERSET AND TAUNTON

A man from Somerset, identified as Austin Stuart Taylor, 21, has been sentenced to nine years in prison after a court found him guilty of a series of serious child sex offences committed across multiple locations including Minehead, Taunton, and Wellington.

The court proceedings revealed disturbing details of Taylor's misconduct, which involved the exploitation and abuse of teenage girls over a period spanning from 2015 to 2017.

The case was brought to a close at Bristol Crown Court, where Taylor was convicted of a total of 15 criminal charges.

These included multiple counts of sexual activity with minors, with victims ranging in age from 13 to 17 years old.

He also faced allegations related to drug supply, possessing indecent images of children, and using premises for illegal activities.

Initially, Taylor had admitted to supplying Class A drugs, such as ecstasy (MDMA), and a Class B substance, possibly cannabis, at the start of the trial, but he denied the remaining charges.

The jury found him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt on several serious counts: three counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, one count of incitement to engage in sexual activity with a minor, three counts of possessing indecent images of children, one count of offering to supply a Class A drug, three counts relating to offering to supply Class B drugs, and one charge of allowing a premises to be used for smoking cannabis.

The court did not overlook the evidence of disturbing images, as it was revealed that police had discovered footage of children as young as three on Taylor’s electronic devices.

Further investigation into Taylor’s phone uncovered numerous photographs depicting his genitalia, some of which he had sent to his victims as part of a grooming process.

He also repeatedly encouraged the girls to produce indecent images of themselves and send them to him, a tactic aimed at further manipulation and control.

During the sentencing hearing, the court heard testimonies from neighbors and witnesses who described seeing young girls, often in school uniform, arriving regularly at properties linked to Taylor.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that Taylor supplied the girls with various drugs, including cannabis, ketamine, and MDMA, as part of his exploitation tactics.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Phillip Clarke characterized Taylor’s behavior as manipulative and calculated.

He explained, “Austin Stuart Taylor is a manipulative individual who plied young girls with drugs in order to gain influence over them and abuse them.

It’s clear he has a disturbing interest in young girls from the images found on his electronic devices.

His actions were deliberate and calculated, and there is absolutely no doubt he was aware of their age when engaging in sexual activity.” As part of the court's sanctions, Taylor was also issued a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a 10-year restraining order to prevent contact with his victims.

Additionally, he will be listed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

Support organizations, including Barnardo’s Against Sexual Exploitation (BASE), provided ongoing assistance to the victims throughout the lengthy legal process, with the aim of helping them recover from their ordeals.

The court also acknowledged the diligent work of law enforcement officers involved in the investigation, including Detective Sergeant Clarke, Detective Constable Paul Moares, and investigations support officer Alan Chambers.

Special recognition was given to Kate Chisnall from BASE for her vital role in supporting the victims.

Since June of the previous year, Somerset police have adopted a collaborative approach to combat child sexual exploitation through initiatives such as Operation Topaz.

This operation promotes multi-agency intelligence sharing, enabling authorities to identify offenders early, prevent offenses, and support victims more effectively.

Originally launched as a pilot in Bristol in January 2017, the scheme has now been extended to Somerset, empowering officers to act swiftly against such criminal behavior.

Detective Chief Inspector Liz Hughes highlighted the benefits of Operation Topaz, stating, “With the introduction of Operation Topaz in Somerset, we are now better equipped than ever to protect children and young people from sexual exploitation.

The partnership approach allows us to identify offenses at an earlier stage, sometimes before the crimes have fully been committed, and helps us build trust with those affected by abuse so we can provide appropriate support.” She concluded, “By sharing information and working together, our aim is to educate, prevent, and ultimately eradicate this heinous form of child sexual abuse.

However, we also rely heavily on public cooperation, and we encourage everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicions to authorities.”
