AUREL BIRLAN SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR HORRIFIC ATTACK IN KENT
Aurel Birlan, a registered sex offender, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of repeatedly raping a woman while she was unconscious in Kent. The horrific incident took place during the early hours of an undisclosed morning in December, leaving the victim subjected to nearly two hours of assault and trauma.
The case was brought before Maidstone Crown Court, where it was detailed that Birlan, who resides on Watts Street in Chatham, committed these grievous offenses in the Medway area.
The assault only ceased when a vigilant passer-by intervened, noticing the distress and the condition of the woman.
The individual observed that she was undressed, unresponsive, and appeared to have sustained injuries.
Concerned by what he saw, the passer-by approached Birlan and questioned him about the woman’s situation.
Realizing the gravity of the scene, the passer-by promptly called emergency services and remained at the scene with both Birlan and the victim until police arrived.
Birlan was arrested on the spot, and subsequent investigations were launched by law enforcement authorities.
Among the evidence collected was CCTV footage showing the woman’s repeated pleas for the attacker to stop, as well as clear indications that she was unconscious for over an hour during the assault.
During court proceedings, Birlan faced multiple charges, including two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault.
He chose to plead guilty to these charges, a decision that led to a life sentence.
The sentencing judge mandated that Birlan serve a minimum of eight years and three months before he could be eligible for parole consideration.
Additionally, the court ordered that he be placed on the sex offenders register for life and issued a restraining order that strictly prohibits him from making contact with the victim.
Detective Sergeant Kendal Moore, who led the investigation, expressed relief at the outcome and emphasized the significance of the community member’s brave intervention.
“Birlan subjected his victim to a prolonged and truly harrowing ordeal, only stopping when a passer-by bravely intervened,” he stated.
“This sentence aims to provide some measure of justice and peace to the survivor, allowing her to rebuild her life with the knowledge that this dangerous man is now behind bars.” Sergeant Moore also commended the victim’s resilience throughout the legal process, noting her dignity and bravery.
He further extended gratitude to the civilian who challenged Birlan, stating that his courageous act was crucial in ensuring Birlan’s swift arrest and in safeguarding the victim from further harm.
The case underscores the importance of vigilance and community support in addressing serious crimes and protecting vulnerable individuals in Kent.
