ASHLEY WARD FROM DUDLEY CAUGHT IN POLICE TRAP TRYING TO MEET CHILD IN GUILDFORD
In a disturbing case that highlights ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation, Ashley Ward, a resident of Dudley, was apprehended by law enforcement officers after attempting to engage in a sexual encounter with a young girl. The incident unfolded in March 2018, when Ward, who openly described himself as a 'very open minded UK perv,' believed he was communicating with an individual offering a seven-year-old child for sexual abuse.
Unbeknownst to Ward, the person he was in contact with was an undercover police officer operating a sting designed to catch individuals with a sexual interest in children.
The police had set up a trap to identify and apprehend predators like Ward, who had been actively seeking to exploit minors.
According to the prosecution, Howard Searle, Ward engaged in online conversations via an internet messaging platform, where he detailed his intentions and preferences regarding the young girl.
The conversations indicated a clear desire to meet and carry out sexual acts with the child, which prompted police to act swiftly.
Plans were made for Ward to meet the supposed child at a coffee shop in Guildford.
However, Ward had to cancel the meeting at the last minute due to unspecified business commitments.
Despite this setback, he attempted to reschedule the encounter at the same location.
Before the meeting could occur, police intervened and arrested Ward during a raid at his home in Pearce Close, Dudley.
During the search, officers seized a mobile phone from Ward’s residence.
Examination of the device revealed the presence of three indecent images of children, one of whom was estimated to be just 18 months old or younger.
This evidence further implicated Ward in child exploitation activities.
Ward subsequently admitted to attempting to arrange a meeting for the purpose of engaging in a child sex offence and also to possessing indecent images of minors.
His actions and the evidence collected against him led to his conviction in Wolverhampton Crown Court.
In sentencing, Judge Amjad Nawaz imposed a three-year prison term on Ward.
Additionally, Ward was subjected to a 10-year Sexual Harm Protection Order, which restricts his activities and access to minors.
The court also mandated that he register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life and prohibited him from ever working with children in any capacity.
This case underscores the persistent efforts of law enforcement agencies to protect children from sexual predators and the importance of vigilance in online spaces where such threats often originate.
